Timbers Tid Bits: Elimination Edition
Well the Portland Timbers were officially eliminated last night by an own goal by the Philadelphia Union. Quite a disappointment if you ask me, but ultimately after giving up two very important home wins to San Jose and Houston it probably should have been expected.
So tomorrow is the final Portland Timbers game of the season. Unfortunate but true. We'll plan on following the play-offs here on Stumptown Footy, as well as continuing our amazing editorial coverage so I hope you guys will stick around.... Seriously it's gonna be amazing!
In the mean time, enjoy today's links!

MP has it about right
At the end of the day inexperience cost us. They wanted to go young and run teams out, which is fine, but experience and maturity does count for something. Our two most experienced MLS players – Jewsbury and Perkins – were probably two of our most consistent players and without either the results this year would’ve been brutal. But it’s all a process. First year is almost out of the way. They have a foundation to build on now and they know what needs upgrading. Next year people should expect improvement from the players who return, cohesive play, a higher place on the table, and playoffs. And eventually trophies have to be the expectation too.
Side note: MLS in Las Vegas would be a big mistake.
Troy Perkins is my MVP this year and it's not particularly close
For all the criticism I leveled at him earlier for his distribution “skills” (and for how inconsistent, yet better, he is at that now), the fact is that without Perkins in goal this team wouldn’t have been anywhere near a playoff place after about August.
Very true
It’s tough to give it to someone else. Jewsbury would have been it at the half, and Chara was our most valuable player once he got settled in, but Perkins was the most consistent player we had all season.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
I'd give the Timbers MVP to Chara
Chara was our most dynamic player both offensively and defensively, so he’s my MVP. Mainly I have Chara in there ahead of Perkins because of the position Perkins plays. Keepers keep the ball out of the goal, but they rarely contribute on offense (Perkins even less so). To put it another way, Perkins was a huge, gigantic reason the Timbers didn’t lose games, but we won games because of Chara.
Yeah, keepers get the short end of the stick. It’s not fair.

It's a shame we couldn't squeak in, but it was a fun first year
Here’s to going out with a win tomorrow.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
Squeak in?
You’ve spent $13 quite well!
A much better first MLS season than I envisioned back in April. I was worried that we’d be closer to what Vancouver did this year. Already looking forward to next season.
It will be interesting to see who the Front Office brings in, and who they let go or trade.
Will we get a ‘rosterbation’ thread in the near future?
Yes
In fact just to give you some premature stuff a few tidbits I have seen from MP:
Roster will include 1 Home Grown Player and 2 players from the 2010 PDL Timbers.
Also can’t find it but I remember seeing that there are 4 names they are targeting for the next year and 1 of them is a big name…..

Cool, thanks!
What are the odds of actually landing all 4 ‘names’ that they are going for? I’d assume that if they are good players, other teams will be interested as well.
But, they probably want to play for awesome fans…so naturally….us!
They might try for 4 or more, but privately would settle
for three. “Better to aim high and be a little short than aim low and hit the mark.”

Oh...
A few of those names or overseas….

It just takes you back to the points we pissed away
Colorado, New York, Toronto and Seattle—all at home.
I think Merritt’s take is right on. Hopefully the lessons are learned and a stronger foundation is in place.

Totally geeking out with the SBN app on Friday night
Nerdy? Yes, possibly. But I love mobile technology. Anyway…
Let’s not ignore the poor away record. Only 2 wins and a -15 or something. Inagural season or not that is goat piss poor.

Yep
The away record is what cost Portland a postseason berth – even more so than poor showings at home. Win more than twice on the road and the playoffs are realistic.
Righ, I know and agree
I think the games I listed above stick out to me because those were games we were playing well, or at least well enough and couldn’t hold onto. On the road we always seemed to come out flatter than an unemployed porn actress. Those weren’t points we pissed away—those were points we weren’t the least bit interested in. But we were holding points in our hand in these games.
Obviously our road impotency was crippling and very near (at least) the top of the list of things to address, but in spite of it had we played 15 extra minutes a handful of times in the comforts of home we could be in the playoffs.

Home points given away
GW waited too long to trade for the defensive help needed to close those games down. We all knew early on that our wingbacks at the time weren’t ready to be regular starting XI, there wasn’t much depth at the position, and midfield had surplus to requirements.

Just a counter thought
Maybe the trade partners weren’t ready for the price we wanted or were asking to high a price to begin with and it took until July for them to come down….

Columbus won the SS in 30 games with 49 points in 2009....
LA will win the SS this year with 67-70 points in 34 games.

Which means
If we came into the league in 2009 we would have made the playoffs….

Quickly! To the Time Machine!
It’s going to be an interesting offseason, to say the least. Our Front Office was learning on the job, as well as the players. I think that the FO has a good plan of getting the ‘right’ players in, now it’s a matter of getting it done.
Who is with me?
I only have 2 seats in my Delorean so who wants to go back to the future?

Cinders Logic
In 2009, it was how soft MLS was without Portland, and once Portland got up to MLS the Sounders success would be over.
In 2011, the Cinders get into MLS, predictably don’t make the playoffs, while Seattle gets better and better, even with the mighty Cinders in MLS.
Congrats on not being Vancouver, see you in 2012.

Someday Sounders will suck and miss the playoffs
It’s inevitable. And when that day comes I will enjoy watching the carnage up there.

Thanks for the congrats on not being Vancouver, NER, TFC, SJ, CHI, CUSA, and DCU [who have 4 stars on their badge for some weird reason]
Hey look, RSL in season 6! CCL Final! Season one RSL? DON’T ASK!
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I'll add that DC has not made the playoffs in 4 years.
And they’re the most successful club in MLS history.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
You guys really need a new derogatory name for the Timbers
We have teams called ‘Fire’ and ‘Heat’ in American sports. I don’t see how ‘Cinders’ is any good at casting shame. Obviously ‘Flounders’ is a gimme, but you guys are better than us at everything, so coming up with something for ‘Timbers’ shouldn’t be too hard.
Talk it over with your friends in your Mom’s Range on the way to your Dad’s Lake House.
Bad logic as it is, I don’t see what it has to do with you. I’m always happy to talk with fans of other teams, so long as they aren’t hardons. So maybe next time…

At least it's actually negative, though
Cinders just doesn’t make any sense. Being hot in sports is desirable—for example how would you describe Albert Pujols? On fire? Hot?
It’s much better but yes, it is still lame. ‘scum’ and ‘land’ just aren’t quite close enough to make it really pop.

What do you expect from the fans who invented "Seat - tle!" "Soun - ders!"
Seriously, it’s looking at them right in the face: the Poopland Gimpers. Come on!

'Gimpers' would be much better
And feces always plays well in condescension.
Now that we have that settled, let’s get to work on a better name for ‘Emerald City Supporters’
