Portland Timbers to Permanently Expand Seating Capacity, Season Ticket Holders
Good news for those of you stuck on the season ticket waiting list! According to a press release sent out by the Timbers FO this morning, the club plans on permanently expanding the seating capacity of the stadium and will allow 2,000 additional season ticket holders
"After taking a detailed look at increasing capacity at the end of our first MLS season, we are comfortable with raising capacity at JELD-WEN Field to accommodate the demand for tickets without negatively impacting the fan experience," said Mike Golub, COO of the Timbers.
The new season ticket holder capacity will be 14,500 up from the 12,500 of this season.
Of course, the even bigger (in my opinion) news is the increase in overall capacity to over 20,000. The Timbers are exploring additional seating options which include adding seats to the SW area, the Widmer Southern Front and the KeyBank Club deck. No hard capacity limit has been set yet so it could be even higher than what we saw at the Houston and New England games.
I, for one, look forward to seeing what they do with the stadium, especially if they actually physically add more seats.

Timbers can be in top 3 in attendance next year.
But that depends on the NYRB and Houston’s new stadium. TFC and Vancouver will also have greater capacity and attendance may come out stronger next year. Certainly just a speculation at this moment.

Isn't Montreal going to play a few in Olympic as well?
Depending on the turnout that could pad some stats.
You can’t convince me this isn’t a great place to either watch soccer or be probed anally:

They said the same thing in 1975 when it was built
This stadium is one of the biggest boondoggles in stadium building history. Built in 1975, not completed until 1988 – that tower and the retractable roof were part of the original design but not installed until 1987/88. The stadium ended up costing more than twice what it was estimated to cost originally.
So, are they talking about building onto the southern and eastern stands?

Hopefully building on the southern. That whole area is an eye sore in my opinion. If they could avoid obstructing the screen and built more bleachers behind the south goal, it would add a good amount of seats and look so much better.

Well, no.
But they have something called right of first refusal. Mainly an interest in the land where they have veto power over the sale of the land. And other easements such as sight lines.

We need more people to pee simultaneously at the same speed. Build a couple of bathrooms against the wall behind the general admission seats.
I would love to see the team work out a deal to take over the sidewalk between 19th and 20th on Morrison
It would be cool to be able to expand the park’s footprint a bit out north to where the sidewalk currently is, which would widen the concourse and allow for more restrooms/food stands, and also turn Morrison into a game-day extension of the stadium like they do at Fenway on Yawkey Way and at Camden Yards on Eutaw St, where the street is part of the stadium on game days and is open to merch and food vendors as well.
Better yet, just tear off a huge chunk of Morrison and repurpose it for the Stadium.
Then expand the concourse out as far as you can! Maybe even make it so the parking garage across the way is enveloped by the new wide concourse!
