Expansion Teams Points Per Match Since 2005
I thought it might be interesting to look at the points per match of each of the expansion teams since RSL and Chivas joined the league in 2005. I could have gone back to 1998 when Chicago and Miami joined the league. But that just seems like a totally different era, and there was contraction between that time and the additions of Chivas and Salt Lake.
Obviously points per match doesn't tell the whole story, as the scheduling, depth and difficulty of a league changes from year to year, but I think it's useful information anyway. Perhaps you could compare the output of the expansion teams to the league average or something to come up with another way to add perspective.
2005
Real Salt Lake--20 points in 32 matches: 0.63
Chivas USA--18 points in 32 matches : 0.56
2007
Toronto--25 points in 30 matches: 0.83
2008
San Jose--33 points in 30 matches: 1.10
2009
Seattle--47 points in 30 matches:1.57
2010
Philadelphia--31 points in 30 matches: 1.03
2011
Vancouver--28 points in 34 matches: 0.82
Portland--42 points in 34 matches: 1.24
Of these teams only Seattle qualified for the playoffs. I think it definitely speaks favorably of the Timbers. It also, however, speaks frustratingly of the Timbers considering the points we all know they could have had.
Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.

Taking a break from rivalry talk for a minute
I think if Sounders had just missed the playoffs in their first year, they would still be where they are now. Making a cameo in the playoffs would have been nice, but Timbers just missing out this year doesn’t knock them off plan. Now if Timbers were like RSL, Chivas, Toronto, or the ’Couve then it would be a different conversation. With that all said, Timbers should be expected to make the playoffs next year.
Almost forgot, shameless plug...

Also consider there was a recently cancelled reserve league in 2008.
Lots of talent on the fringes was on the market in 2009.
Other than that, the competitiveness of teams was quite narrow in previous years. The gap from top to bottom is getting wider. I don’t think we’re going to see worst to first as often as in MLS’s past.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
So basically
The Timbers are the 2nd best Expansion team ever.

Well, if we are talking finishes...
3rd. Chicago won the league, Open Cup, and MLS Cup in their first year of existence (1998).

If you disregard Miami making the playoffs in 1998 [8th in a field of 12],
and Chicago winning the MLS Cup in 1998.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
But I forgot Miami...
Curses.

Good catch
Vancouver’s ppm as listed above is correct at 0.82. Portland’s should be 1.24.

Fixed that
and the wrong year for CHI/MIA. That’s why it’s a ‘fan’ shot and not a ‘pro’ shot.

For kicks and giggles.
you can work out the number of wins/supposed ties/losses at Wikipedia. Link
So, PPM for 1998:
1998
Chicago Fire—56 points in 32 matches: 1.75
Miami Fusion—35 points in 32 matches : 0.56
Note:
Wins (W) are worth 3 points.
Shootout Wins (SW) are worth 1 point, and is considered a Win in the standings.
Shootout Loss (SL) are worth 0 points, and is considered a Loss in the standings.
Loss (L) are worth 0 points.
Chicago had two SL and Miami had 0. So, if the points were after a full 90 all you need to add from the numbers above is 2 pts to Chicago and one point to Miami.
