Stumptown Footy Community Protected List: Eric Alexander
With the Expansion draft less than a month away it is time to decide who we, the Stumptown Footy Community, would protect. The goal is to create the top 11 players whom you want to protect through a vote by comments. We will not be following the international player rules as it gets super complicated if you want the rules go here.
How it works:
- For each player we will post a front page article highlighting a specific players pros/cons and any stats (if available)
- Vote by posting a Yes (to Protect) or No (don't Protect) in the subject of a comment, then explain why in the message
- We (the editors) will keep track of all the yes/no votes for each player
- At the end of the whole roster we will total up the results and post the community's Protected list
- Your list will be compared to the list of each contributing editor
- The only player we will not be voting on is Darlington Nagbe as he is automatically protected based on his Generations Adidas Status.
Eric Alexander
Info
23 years old and just finished his second year in the MLS. Current salary according to the MLS Players Union is $46,750.
Stats
| Year | Club | GP | GS | G | MIN | A | SHT | SOG | FC | OFF | Y | R |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2011 | Portland Timbers | 6 | 3 | 0 | 249 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 2011 | FC Dallas | 22 | 16 | 0 | 1218 | 0 | 17 | 2 | 11 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Pros
Great foot skills with the ability to pass out of trouble. Out of all the outside midfielders who played this year for the Timbers he is the most defensive minded.
Cons
Young and untested and at times looked lost.
Notes
John Spencer says Alexander's best game in a Timbers uniform will be next year.
So should do we Protect him or do we leave him unprotected? Remember vote with Yes or No in the subject line.

Since we can only protect 11, he’s kind of one of the odd men out. If I have to have a reason…

His age and skill for his salary are two valuable to the team at this stage

Yes
More skillful than Zizzo and able to actually play out of a tight space with great foot skills and passing. Too often we as fans complained with the lack of possession and Alexander actually helps with that.

Yes
I just realized that he is a no on the list that I put together recently, but he is dirt cheap and with talent to spare. Plus, he has a hell of a shot, great passing and great dribbling. I think that Spencer is right on the money and that he could blow up next year. If I was Montreal I would snap him up in a heartbeat.

Yes
My heart says no but my head says yes. Jewsbury is getting older. We possibly could switch to a 4-3-3, and need a defensive winger if Zizzo or Alhassan gets moved up to the striker position.
Frankly, his defensive capabilities clinch it for me, and he’s only going to get better.
Blazers win!
Yes
Guaranteed comp of 46,750 is lower than for Khalif (69,250) and Zizzo (73,250) and I think if one of these guys gets left unprotected for me it would be Zizzo.
Boy it will be hard to keep my Yes comments to 11 players. Hopefully we already have an agreement with the Impact that they just select Pore but either way I think this is a great topic for discussion in the days ahead for our Stumptown Footy community.
Yes
I feel like he could become Jewsberry’s replacement. His youth is certainly an advantage and his skill set would be an improvement. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him next season. He did well for first team and looked impressive in the reserve games. He’s definitely earned a full season with the Timbers.
No
Didn’t see enough from him to justify a “Yes”. We have lots of “Young, showing promise” guys on the roster already. Even if we don’t protect him it doesn’t mean we will necessarily lose him so I’d say it’s worth the risk.
Yes.
We didn’t see a lot. But some defense and size from that position could be valuable to us.

Yes
Young, high upside, most hipster looking player on the team, so we kinda have to keep him. Cheap and skillful, with decent defensive skills.
Yes
Inexpensive and young. Although we didn’t get to see a lot of him, it looked to me like he has good skill on the ball and better decision making that our other mids, save Chara. Excited to see what he can grow into with more playing time.
No
I don’t really know how well he actually fits into what Portland’s midfield has attempted to be under John Spencer, and I’d ideally like to keep players that fit what the manager wants to do.
YES
Too cheep and too much potential to get rid of him. I’m more of a fan of getting rid some of the guys who have had their shot and squandered it…
UPDATE
10 Yes and 3 No.
I will be posting a new one tonight for our net vote.

YES!!!
He has great vision on the field. He has improved offensively and I think we need to see him for a full season!
Yes
His skills and vision are worthy to have a whole season to show what he can do.

Yes
I’m don’t have anything to add that isn’t mentioned above. I’m excited to see him play more.
Yes
A meat and potatoes wide player who is flexible enough to play almost anywhere in the midfield. Young and cheap as well.
