SF Community Protection List: Midfielders Edition
Time for the midfielders and don't forgot to vote for the others here.
How it works
- Vote by posting a Yes (to Protect) or No (don't Protect) in the subject of a comment, then explain why in the message
- We (the editors) will keep track of all the yes/no votes for each player
- At the end of the whole roster we will total up the results and post the community's Protected list
- Your list will be compared to the list of each contributing editor
- The only player we will not be voting on is Darlington Nagbe as he is automatically protected based on his Generations Adidas Status.
More after the jump.
Diego Chara
Info
He won 80% of his tackles and still only received 7 yellows for the year. According to Paulson will be a DP for the length of his contract. Surprisingly his salary is only listed as $143,000ish.

My mistake, we are not voting on Nagbe

Protect Chara and Jewsbury
No to Zizzo, because although his speed is a big plus, when he goes up against a speedy defender it’s evident that he doesn’t have a whole lot else to offer. He’ll learn some of that I’m sure, since he’s still young, but I don’t think we’ll risk losing him if we don’t protect him.
And we aren’t voting on Nagbe.

I say yes to Chara and Zizzo
Jewsbury I would leave unprotected, because:
1. He is not in the prime of his career, nor approaching it.
2. He faded as the year closed. First half MVP, second MIP (I for invisble)
3. We have other players that can step in and shoulder his load, like Marcelin and Alexander for example (there are others that I can’t quite place)
4. Had some nagging injuries throughout the second half of the season, ones he’s still rehabbing.
5. Who really thinks that Montreal will take him?
6. Even if they do take him, we have Brunner as our Alternate captain.
7. Chewie was already taking most of the corners after being brought in anyways.
In my opinion, while I love Capt. Jack, we can afford to leave him unprotected because we have other, younger, higher-ceiling players that can fill the void, as well as others to assume the leadership role.
Blazers win!
I think Jewsbury fading had a bit to do with Chara coming on as well
His role changed. And I think Chabala took corners from one side and Jewsbury the other—but I might be wrong

Agreed.
Jewsbury went from being a box to box midfielder to a defensive midfielder and had a lot more defensive responsibility. He was playing the position on the field where you don’t want to notice him.

Also, Jewsbury was injured a lot in the second half of the season.
And he sat a game due to yellow card accumulation.

Yes, Yes, Yes
I’m disappointed that Chara will be a DP. He’s fantastic. But I liked the thought of having no DP spot encumbered.
I hope the next Jewsbury emerges next year, but I want the Cap around for year two as well.
I love Zizzo as a change of pace sub.

YES, Yes and yes
Chara was one of our best last season and it appears he’ll only get better
Jewsbury deserves the respect for his early season. I think the questions about the second half still remain to be answered. But I believe he deserves the respect of being protected.
Zizzo – I agree with the criticism regarding his only asset being speed, and I wonder if he’ll ever be more than that. But I think we should give him one more year to find out. Discounting the rumored deal with Montreal I believe he would be a player they might consider taking.
Chara and Jewsbury
Chara is our best field player hands down.
Jewsbury offers a huge question as I think he is only decent at holding mid but his leadership and set piece ability are key to our team. Central mid will be very interesting next year especially depending on if we bring in another high ceiling player.
Zizzo definitely a no. Speed only asset has been mentioned. Has a knee injury too which hampers that asset and should put a huge ? in Montreal’s eyes. Not sure why you would take an injured player. I hope we improve at the wings and Zizzo is a guy we bring off the bench.
Yes to all three.
Chara will draw all star consideration next year.
Zizzo is still young enough to add to his game. He draws fouls in threatening locations, as many defenders simply cannot keep up with him. Ideally we get a better winger and relegate him to high level sub, but for now, worth keeping.
Jewsbury… It would be a major slap in the face to not protect your captain and only all star. Hopefully we have better options moving forward next year, but still. It would send the wrong message to the team to not have him on the protected list.
Yes, Yes, No
Chara is a no brainer. Yes to Jack only because he had a career year and he mostly likely won’t have more value than what he has now. No to Zizzo only because he’s injured and I doubt they’ll pick an injured player, so I wouldn’t use a spot on him now.
I love Portland because everyone here takes things so seriously, sort of.
Yes to Chara and Zizzo. No to Captain Jack
I have a feeling that Jewbury wont be taken based on his age and how he faded.
Chara I feel may become one of our best players and we started to see what he was capable of at the end of the season.
I think that Zizzo is a game changer and you need some of those players around.
