I almost hope the Impact take LeVesque(sp?)
Then we’d only have to see his ugly face once a year

Somewhat surprised by LA Galaxy's list
protecting two goalkeepers yet leaving Chad Barrett and Paolo Cardozo unprotected.
Anybody know who this Vitor Pereira is?

Interesting listings there
Lovel Palmer protected over Mike Chabala? Rodney Wallace over Sal Zizzo and Jake Gleeson? Eric Alexander left unprotected too.
Also both of Seattle’s goalkeepers left unprotected. Troubling for them (I suppose good for us) that it seems they don’t think much of either of them as Keller’s replacement. Bobby Convey also left unprotected.
You could fashion yourself a decent little club with a lot of those unprotected players.
Seattle will be shopping for a starting keeper.
The two they have are not ready for prime time.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Fucito
I think they Fucito is going to be picked over anyone else on the Flounder list.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
Zizzo and Chabala are probably the biggest surprises on that list.
Personally I would have protected Adin Brown because of the Tursi commercials, but that’s just me.

Good Call
Yeah interesting to see that Palmer is ahead of Chabala on the list of Defenders.
Wallace? Really? Not sure on that one.
However if all the signs are correct we just get to speculate what it means about what the FO thinks of the roster.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
Bobby Convey is on the way out at San Jose.
He had a few choice words about the coaching/FO at the end of the season with regards to the new contract he was offered. If he doesn’t get go overseas or get picked in the expansion draft he will almost certainly be available in the re-entry draft.

More MP tweets
good conversation with Coach Klinsmann yesterday. PDX is definitely on USMNT radar. Gold Cup game in 2013? Would love it #rctid
fyi…on the O piece: GCA is correct that 2 of our players will have green cards very soon. but expect more to have them prior to ’12 season
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
More than 2?
Does MP have an in with INS? Great news from MP!

Man I love MP's twitter account
Some teams across the pond seem to have noticed diego chara’s play. Turning down significant offer this week.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I love his feed too
I was surprised by that myself.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
This is great news
I did not know that a player only needed a green card to be a domestic player. I thought they had to be a US citizen (not sure why I thought that).
Yeah Green Card only
I think this is because they then no longer need a visa and that is what makes them Domestic.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
Green card is more like a permanent resident status.
Visa is a temporary grant of stay.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
You only need a passport from one EU nation to be a "domestic player" in each EU-based league
Hence why George John got his Greece passport to possibly play in England.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
exactly why I was surprised by this...our guys will not have US passports
A passport (demonstrating citizenship in that country) is completely different than a green card (which allows for permanent residency). That is why I was surprised that you only need permanent residency to be considered domestic. Makes some sense though I guess.
Chalk it up to FIFA and MLS player rules
which are based on the local domestic legal resident policies.
The reason for the passport in England is because England will NOT offer you a work visa to play at any level unless you are capped with a FIFA top-70 [or so] team, odd, but true. EU employment rules accept any other EU nation’s status and allow you to work there. Think of labor movement akin to moving here in the states.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Did we really have to give Montreal an international slot
to make this happen?
Hope it isn’t of much value to us…
volatilelyle.com
I am sitting here thinking there is something else there
Maybe we traded for allocation money….
As My Brother points out in another thread MP says more than 2 of our internationals are getting Green Cards. Which means 3+ of our players are going from international to domestic and therefore opening up spots for us to sign more internationals/trade those spots away.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
My other thought is
We tell them who we want from the list and trade Ryan pore and Intl spot for that player
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
So, basically like a trade for a guy that their going to draft?

Surprised to see Wallace on the list instead of Gleeson
They clearly value defenders more than anything else. But if rumors are true and Montreal agreed to not select a Timbers player or will just select Pore, per the terms of the loan agreement, then I suppose it’s all moot. Then again, I’m not big on handshake deals in today’s world.
I wouldn’t worry about Zizzo because of his injury.
I love Portland because everyone here takes things so seriously, sort of.
Merritt is saying on Twitter that this is no handshake deal
Exact words:
@MerrittPaulson: @portlandpadre very curious what would make anyone think its just a handshake. other than that not commenting….
Blazers win!
Well the article made it sound like it was a deal that the Impact wouldn't touch our players
Hopefully thats the case.
The only thing I gleaned was this
The Timbers have a deal in place with Montreal in which the Impact have agreed to not select any Portland players who finished the season with the Timbers.
players who finished the season with the Timbers.
Only person who fits that bill is Ryan Pore.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Pore did finish the season with the Timbers though
The USL season ended much earlier than the MLS season, and Pore was back with the team by then.
Blazers win!
Merrit p
Made it clear there is a solid deal in place. No backing out from impact or Portland. Hence his tweet the list means nothing. Nothing to read into.
by portlandpadre on Nov 21, 2011 8:55 PM PST via mobile reply actions
I still think we overpaid if we have to give Pore and an international slot just to not lose someone else
Unless we made the deal before we knew Pore was someone they’d want to keep around, or there is something else going on.
Or maybe the team thinks more of some of our players than I do.

by almost awesome on Nov 21, 2011 9:06 PM PST up reply actions
well we had to give them something
Cuz they basically did us a favor for taking Pore. We all know he can’t play at the MLS level, so they did us a favor by taking him, so they probably wanted something useful also.
Expansion draft is like stealing a player for nothing, gotta compensate for the average player
that could be possibly taken in that draft.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
He's failed a couple times in MLS
But after he performed for Montreal, I just have trouble seeing them pick another Timber over him.

by almost awesome on Nov 21, 2011 11:01 PM PST up reply actions
That works for me
I have no urge what so ever in having pore play for the timbers. He played well for us in the USL also, but hte minute we put in him agianst MLS teams he struggled big time. Just not athletic enough and quick enough to make a difference.
I still don't really believe that
I think he can contribute on the MLS level. It’s all about the system, and he didn’t fit Spencer’s. Moffatt wasn’t exactly lighting it up for us either, but he was a solid player for Houston.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
Seconding this.
Pore’s biggest issue is that he is not very good as a pure striker and not very good as a pure winger and coaches have trouble figuring out where he should line up. He has the talent, but…

Gotta say it...
How amazing is it that Futty and Horst are protected? Futty goes from D2 obscurity to consistent Starting XI and now a protected MLS player. Horst goes from being loaned to D2 by RSL, to unprotected last year, and now a protected player. Good for them.
I love Portland because everyone here takes things so seriously, sort of.

Unrelated to the Timbers portion, but I was curious
watching the MLS Finale last night, it sounded like it was pretty much a certainty that Beckham was leaving LA, if thats the case, why did they protect him?

He has a no trade clause, so as long as he is still technically in contract with the league he cannot be left exposed in the expansion draft.

I think that there are a couple other DP's with no trade clauses as well.
Pretty much the big names ones: Marquez, Henry, Donovan, and Keane.

I imagine a guy like Becks or Henry wouldn't want to sign in LA or NY
just to turn around and get traded to say Utah or San Jose

I don't think
it’s a certainty that Beckham is gone. I wouldn’t bet on him staying, but I think there’s a chance he’ll stay in LA.
He’s not going back to a really big time European team team – he’s just not good enough any more – and I wouldn’t think he would be interested in playing for a kind of second tier team in a top league. He’s going to want to play for a prestigious team in whatever league he’s in.
Paris Saint-Germain makes sense to me, and would fit his persona, but I don’t know that they would throw more money at him than LA would.
He came out and said today that he had not had any talks with PSG.
Although now that the playoffs are over, who knows what will happen.

Rumors hold that LA is not throwing money at him. Much of the same from LA.
But PSG’s got oil money to burn. All about capital investments and never stock investments for most Arab spenders.
