MLS Expansion Draft Live Discussion Thread; Who Will The Montreal Impact Take?
UPDATE: Expansion Draft is over. Picks are below. No Portland Timbers players were selected.
Welcome to the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft! We've covered the event quite extensively already here on Stumptown Footy, but now here's the real deal. Who will the Montreal Impact take? Could Ryan Pore be on his way out? No more need to speculate as the event kicks off.
I'll be following the event live and updating the thread here with the picks as they come in, as fast as I can. Otherwise please feel free to use this as the official discussion thread.
Montreal Impact's selections:- Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo)
- Zarek Valentin (Chivas USA)
- Justin Mapp (Philadelphia Union)
- Bobby Burling (San Jose Earthquakes)
- Jeb Brovsky (Vancouver Whitecaps)
- Collen Warner (Real Salt Lake)
- Josh Gardner (Columbus Crew)
- Sanna Nyassi (Colorado Rapids)
- James Riley (Seattle Sounders)
- Seth Sinovic (Sporting Kansas City)
Other trades:
- James Riley to Chivas USA for Justin Braun.
- Tyson Wahl to Montreal for allocation money.
And that looks to be it! No Portland Timbers players were selected. I think we might still see a trade where Ryan Pore goes to Montreal but that'll come outside of the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft.

Wow
They Took Ching…… Interesting.

If they spoke to him before about it though...
Why would they select him if he was considering retiring?

Kind of sounds like they want to trade him.

Hold him hostage for some allocation cash or another player from Houston?
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Aside from Ching, who probably won't be there, seems like a pretty cheap group

Not pretty cheap... really, really cheap
Cooper and Jewsbury close to making more than whole roster cheap. Neither one of them is making much more than NBA minimum either
It's not that bad
Valentin is expensive for what he is. Yes they went for an inexpensive expansion draft, but I wouldn’t say that means they are incredibly cheap (the rest of their record indicates that well enough)
Besides, I don’t recall the Timbers selecting a lot of expensive players last year, either. KG excepted.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
Kind of a snoozer
Valentin and Ching picks are interesting. Riley to Chivas seems like an odd move. Otherwise, not much to talk about, eh?
I love Portland because everyone here takes things so seriously, sort of.

Ah, I thought I heard there may have been more involved like
They wouldn’t pick Timbers, then PDX would trade Pore for players and/or money.

Timbers did give them an international slot for 2012 as well as loaning out Pore.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Looks like nothing.
But we’re not losing anything more valuable than Pore. Pore didn’t play well enough here to have much MLS trade value.
I really did think he would end up with the Expos, though
One way or another.
The deal makes a lot more sense to me now though. It was just the international slot (not Pore) for no Timbers being picked—I felt that Pore himself, given his performance in Montreal, was worth that.
I wonder if MON is at all interested in having him around next year.

Expos = Impact?
So what was the trade?

We traded an international roster slot to not lose any Timbers in the draft
It had to do with the Ryan Pore loan. I thought it also had to do with Pore playing for them next year as well, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

interesting
I wonder if they had their eyes on a non-Pore Timber?

I seem to be in the minority
But I think Montreal took advantage of this draft pretty well. I might have picked up Convey, but he can be a pain, so I understand the rationale. If they can leverage Ching into a piece, this could be a great start for them.
Riley to Braun strikes me as a good deal, Braun is young and has a lot of talent. Riley is a good defender and a nice piece, but Braun is a better pick for the future.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
Add one more to your minority
I think the overall success of the draft may hinge on what they get for Ching, but Justin Braun and Sanna Nyassi are both young and have a ton of talent. I like Justin Mapp a lot, too.
And I think they built a pretty solid and experienced defensive foundation with Gardner and Burling. The Timbers could have used that kind of experience from our defense, especially early in the season.
I’m a little surprised that they didn’t get a couple more midfielders, but they also look like they’re not done dealing.

Yeah he can slide into that 3 spot……

Tall but kinda one footed
Played Community College soccer, No US national team experience.
Sounds like they got his value about right.
Chivas basically gave up Braun and Valentin for Riley
Unless Chivas has another move in mind, they got worse today.

You expect something else?
Especially from Chivas? Just seems par for the course with them.
