Portland Timbers' First Kick is on March 12th at Jeld-Wen Field
Well this is quite early from what we're used to, but apparently the MLS HQ has decided to release the home opening dates for all clubs ahead of the 2012 season. Essentially what we have here is a list of when each team is playing their home opener for the 2012 season.
The Portland Timbers, as the title suggests, opens up Jeld-Wen Field on March 12th, 2012 although against which other team is not yet known. However, with a bit of deductive reasoning we can at the very least say that it's not:
- Chivas USA
- Colorado Rapids
- D.C. United
- FC Dallas
- Los Angeles Galaxy
- San Jose Earthquakes
- Seattle Sounders
- Vancouver Whitecaps
As each of those teams are also having their home opener for that weekend. Anybody care to hazard a guess?
Here's the full rundown of home openers for each team:
WEEK 1
Saturday, March 10: Colorado Rapids, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Sunday, March 11: Chivas USA, FC Dallas
Monday, March 12: Portland Timbers
WEEK 2
Saturday, March 17: Sporting Kansas City, Montreal Impact, Real Salt Lake
Sunday, March 18: Philadelphia Union
WEEK 3
Saturday, March 24: Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, Toronto FC
Sunday, March 25: New York Red Bulls
WEEK 10
Saturday, May 12: Houston Dynamo (new stadium opener)
Houston is pulling something similar to what Portland and Sporting KC did last year with regards to their new stadium. In both occasions in 2011 it seemed to turn out well for each team with both experience a nice boost. So maybe Houston will be able to ride off that.
Also it's interesting to me that both Chivas USA and LA Galaxy are having their home openers on the same weekend (not the same day) as they both share HDC. Looks like some cleaning crew are going to be pulling double time.

Yeah,
but I want to get in line early. Want to make sure I get my regular spot (more or less)….
I guess I could I might need to take two days off :-)
I don't think they'll put Houston on Nat TV
the whole “marquee” game. LAG is playing that weekend, so they are out. If not NYRB, I could see Montreal being the other likely team.
They probably will for their home opener. The stadium should be pretty great, plus MLS tries to give new grounds maximum exposure
Speaking of, who else really wants the Timbers to be the team they open it against, and for the Timbers to lay a colossal beat down on them?
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
Anyone else notice
that they seem to be trying to accommodate the weather?
The teams that don’t play at home till week 3 are: NYRB, Chicago, Columbus, New England, and Toronto. Montreal plays at home in week 2, but they will be indoors the first few games.
Probably won’t make a huge difference, but it seems like a smart move.
Wonder what they have in mind
If they do have NBC or ESPN in mind then it says a lot about how highly they value Portland. I’ll admit the thought of it possibly being a Monday night football thing on NBC Sports has me excited. If not national TV, then a Monday night home opener still sounds cool.
I love Portland because everyone here takes things so seriously, sort of.

I don't think it would be ESPN
Since they always get the First Kick match of the season.
My guess is that this has to be for an NBC match.

It should not be ESPN
Their Monday night is often dedicated to Baseball.

Won't that be too early for baseball?

Yes, but programming a Monday night, only to later move MLS to other nights?
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Ah, I see
I’m noticing, though, that none of the other home openers are on Monday nights. It could just be a one-off thing for the first weekend of the season.

Well, picture it this way.
ESPN will be showing First Kick, guaranteed. Why would ESPN take another game two days later on Monday?
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Good point
If it’s NBC, that’s tremendous. If not, still a great time anyway.

Also remembered that Baseball Tonight should be airing in March too.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Actually, it looks like ESPN2 or something
NBCSN has the NHL at 6 pm Pacific on March 12. That still leaves NBC if possible.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Whoever it is, it has to be a national TV game
Otherwise, why play on Monday night?

As a fellow ginger
Here’s hoping he’s joined Bolton Wanderers by the time Colorado comes to Portland.

certainly
as I am no fan of the “ginger” moniker, it is a prety vile thing to call someone really

Wait, so what were you heckling him for?
I don’t remember an incident this season involving him, but it was a long time ago.
Or was it just general idiocy? I’m on board with that.

He taunted the Army
After Colorado scored their late goal instead of celebrating with his team he just ran in front of the Army and started beating his chest in front of us.
Hamid too...
Bill Hamid did that too after DC won the game at Jeld-Wen. He started taunting the Army
i just don't remember that
hmmm
Larentowicz was pretty animated about it, tucking the ball under his jersey, laughing, pointing that kind of stuff. I was down low in 101 that day, can’t remember where I was sitting for the DC game.
A guy scores a goal and runs along the front of the army arms spread and so on, that is one thing, but open taunting, that needs to be remembered for subsequent visits to Jeld Wen

Ohhhhhhhh, ok.
Yeah, screw that guy.

he also put the ball up his shirt
was pointing, generally just taunting the timbers army all round

My Bad
I know some Red Heads laugh at this, at least the ones I know personally. My bad!
Sorry

well the south park bit is funny
but using it as a taunt is a bad idea is my general point so if that is what we want to do, I would be happier he was not coming back is all.

Oh, I laugh, don't you worry
And I actually don’t have anything wrong with “ginger.” I don’t like “red” much, but that’s mainly because that’s what the opposing team always called me when I played soccer in high school.
But I do stick up for my fellow redheads. Especially red haired dudes. For a guy there’s not really an upside to having red hair.

Hmmm
Here is some info on him to try and find something….
Attended Brown University.
Straight from Wikipedia:
Larentowicz’s nicknames include Big Red, Ginger, Ginger Lobby Eater, Ginger Bonita, Ginger Jeff, and der Kaiser (a reference to Franz Beckenbauer). He also won the nickname “the Ginja Ninja” after scoring an acrobatic goal against the Chicago Fire on May 6, 2007.

Ginger Lobby Eater?
Part of me wants to ask, but the smarter part would rather never know.
