My Memorable Inaugural MLS Season Moments
Well, with a little time separating us from the season I thought I would take a little time to recount some of my favorite moments from the season, you know the ones that really stuck with me as a relatively new soccer fan. These are sequenced in order of my preference, and are subject to my personal memory at the time. Looking back, wathing tons of video, I would sequence them differently if i were picking best plays (nagbe's goal would top it off for certain, some of Perkins Goal work would outclass the Gleeson save), that is not what this is though!
10. I don't have video of it, and it is not a good memory, but one I will not forget anytime soon. Jeff Larentowicz taunting the Timbers Army after their goal to secure their victory at Jeld-Wen. That bum with the ball up his shirt, I am not readily going to forget that moment and I certainly hope the Army has something special in store for him on his next visit to Portland for sure.
9. Cooper from Alhassan:
8. Amazing Nagbe Goal of the Year Winner, it was on the far end, but it was surprising when it went back in when it was clearly on the way out from our end, little did I realize at the time exactly how amazing it was (two views):
7. OK this is the only one that seeing it afterward mae me add it in. But still the feeling live was great, even if I thought this went off the post only in live action, Jake Gleeson save of the week:
6. Perlaza goal agaist fire. This was straight downfield from where I sat that night, one of the clearest other end goals I had seen all year:
5. Timbers Army invading Qwest Field, this is a clip of video I shot, it was awesome:
4. Jorge Perlaza Goal against the Galaxy:
3. Chabala goal against the Galaxy, we were awesome in this match, we really were:
2. Kalif Alhassan assist against FC Dallas, Alhassan taking on all of those players, drawing them all in and freeing up Wallace, great play:
1. Opening Night is hard to beat. My seats are in the TA section and that was a rocking night. The rain did nothing o dampen the spirits of the evening and that feeling is best embodied by the stadium singing the national anthem:
These are not all of the moments I remember obviously, but they are the top 10 as they came to me looking back on this great season. I can not wait until March 12!
Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.

All that can be said his he's never seen a home crowd get so under his nerves as the TA did.
That and I can attest that even in the front row at the Dick, I only once heard their SG say anything audible or coherent.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I walked through there SG
And they were looking at the 500 TA and where “that is a true supporters group”

Nice post
The Galaxy game was probably the season highlight for me, certainly outside of the home opener. Not so much because it was the Galaxy, but because it was the best team in MLS, and a team that had crushed us earlier, and we dominated them. The fact that I stayed up until 1am or so watching it was pretty fun too.
Best moment was the anthem though. That was the most awesome (in every sense) thing I have seen at a sporting event. I really wish I could say I was there for that.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!
The anthem
I was thinking about it when watching the video in this post. I really think the Timbers FO should make this a tradition. Each year at the home opener the crowd sings the anthem. I do not think that is overkill at all. Just a great “welcome back” gesture for all to share in.
I don't know what Jeff Larentowicz did
Maybe it really was taunting, maybe not, but I remember when Josh Wolff scored for DC in Portland, and then ran over to the flag and sang into it like a microphone. I heard a lot of people calling him “classless,” or saying he was “taunting.” What? If your opponent scores, good for him and he has the right to celebrate. Yes, it can be taken overboard, but just because someone on the other team looks at you funny, don’t take it personally.
I thought that Wolff's thing was funny
I do think that Hamid took it a bit far, though – at the end of the game he squirted his water bottle into the TA and spent a couple minutes yelling at them. Not playful back-and-forth, either, but straight up yelling, chest-pounding and generally being a douche. THAT was classless – Wolff’s was pretty much standard celebration, as far as I saw.
I have no problem with a player celebrating a goal or a win both things are hard to do. Just do it with your team and not directed specifically at a section of the opposing fan base. I would have just as much problem if a Timber did the same thing at an opposing ground.
I did not notice the Hamid thing
at least the army was on him for 45 straight minutes. Being a goalie in front of the army does have to be nerve racking. I can see how a goalie would lose their cool and become an idiot…
I am with you, do whatever you like, just leave the other teams fans out of it.

Although Saunders and his team got destroyed, I remember seeing him applaud the TA
Of course, he’d been in Portland and already had great respect for the TA.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
he was definitely taunting the army, 2 basic distinctions
1. the rest of the team ran to their bench and toward their supporters section to celebrate. He ran towards 101.
2. He had the ball stuffed it up his shirt and pointed into the crowd laughing.
3. He did the whole holding his hand up to his ear thing to the Army,
He was right down in front of me, trust me he was taunting the Army section.
I don’t mind antics in soccer, funny goal celebrations and the like, it is really hard to score in the MLS. Let them have some fun. This was different than the rest of the goals scored on us at Jeld Wen though, that is for sure.
If he wants to taunt the fans, the fans have every right to give it back with interest is all I am saying and I am just hoping we do not forget is all.

Nice and not so nice moments
I stand in Ton 2 and well remember the taunting after the game. Total jackass.
But one of my favorite memories was toward the end of the Galaxy game and watching Beckham getting ready to take the corner kick. He turned toward the Army and took time to soak in the moment in front of the crowd. It looked like someone who knew it was his last visit, and wanted to remember that moment.
Beckham did look to enjoy the entire game that night
even though it was a loss. I am a little peeved at the timbers fans that sit at those tables right on the sidelines for not heckling him more when he was less than 10 feet away taking a free kick.
I gotta say, some of those passes into the box were awesome to see live coming right at you even if they did not score on any of them.

His precision
It is so amazing, he hits a perfect ball 70% of the time.

I remember my inaugural use of spell check
How could you leave off the Open Cup final, when members of TA infiltrated the Clink disguised as Fire supporters? That was classic!

Go Troll somewhere else. Not like we go to SAH and post pointless dribble about Marching Bands.

How is this a troll?
Are you saying it didn’t happen? Granted, the author may not have been there in person, but at least it was one of my top memories of Portland’s first season.

Boy you guys are touchy
just a joke about a typo, I couldn’t resist as it was in the title. Proof, well I don’t have a photo, but it’s documented here: http://www.sounderatheart.com/2011/10/4/2469281/us-open-cup-final-sounders-v-fire-gamethread
And my bad, it just says they were in Pioneer Square, not sure about the stadium, I wasn’t sitting near any Fire supporters, actual or pseudo. Anyways, just thought it was funny and related to content in this article, specifically #5 on the list.

Did you read the drivel in the Rivalry thread?
And No it has nothing to do with Portland’s Season.
You do know there is a good relationship between Section 8 and the TA right? Which means Chicago fans received TA scarves and just to piss of Sounder fans wore them.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
We're touchy because this blog has a longish history of Sounder fans coming over here for no reason other than to stir shit up
We have no way of knowing you or your sense of humor, and given the record of Sounder fans (not all of them, but a lot of them) who come here from time to time just to be jerks, we assumed you were one of them. Apologies if that was not the case.

2009 should've been your notice that you were lying about the Open Cup Final.

I was lucky enough to travel with my Mom and my Brothers to the very first game in Colorado. One of the best trips I have ever taken and an amazing memory with my Mom.
