Timbers Tid Bits: Post Cascadia Cup Edition
This past weekend was huge for the Portland Timbers. Despite losing a reserve game, our primary team came away with a point on the road against an overtly hostile team and atmosphere. These puts as being tie, once again, with the Seattle Sounders with 14 points apiece. The Timbers do still have two games on Seattle however.
Anyway, today's news will be heavily focused on last Saturday's outcome, but there are some interesting league-wide articles to pay attention to as well. Enjoy!

The PDX/SEA rivalry would be great for US soccer if anybody were able to watch it
I will never understand why the MLS equivalent of Yankees/Red Sox was scheduled for 11pm on the east coast. If you want to sell/grow/promote your league, the way to do it is to broadcast the best rivalry in the league at a time when people are available to watch it. It’s great that it was on in prime time on the west coast, but we were going to be watching anyway.
I agree...
Granted the competition was between two west coast teams. Still there were plenty of people who would have tuned into the game on the East coast were the broadcasting schedule a little more reasonable. Even a 7:00pm kick off time would have been far better.

MLS has said on many occasions that PDX/SEA is a marquee matchup
it should be treated as such. The SEA game here is at 2pm I think, and I believe is also on ESPN, so that’s good, but still – if you’re calling the game a marquee matchup, you should let as many people as possible see it all over the country. It should have been a 5pm KO in my opinion.
ESPN coverage of MLS
is only slightly better than Fox Soccer. They at least provide it in HD. Otherwise it is an after thought for them.
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
I've read elsewhere that it's intentional.
At that time slot there’s no other sports competition and the new MLS target market—young males—are often awake and interested then.
Plus, soccer fans don't care what time it is
They’ll watch a Euro match at 3am if they really want to
Blazers win!
Soccer fans are not who ESPN should be targeting
ESPN should be targeting people who might be somewhat interested but have never watched a game.

11 PM turned out to be great
I was really bummed about the start time, but in the end it worked out really well. My wife and I live in Manhattan and have opted to not get cable to save some money. So, we were going to have to find a bar to watch the game. The Red Sox and Yankees and the NHL Bruins and Lightning games started at 7/7:30, so there would have been little chance of us getting the match on TV. But, since the game didn’t start until 11, all of the other games were over and the bartender happily tuned to ESPN2 for us. Plus, my 8.9 month pregnant wife impressed all of our friends by staying up and cheering loudly at Futty’s header.
Anyway, the 11 PM start timecan be a little rough, but at least here in NYC it makes watching easier.
Awesome!
If you don’t mind me asking, what makes a couple New Yorkers fans of the Timbers? Portland local?

Corvallis local
My family moved to Corvallis when I was one (don’t tell the locals, they think I’m a native) and was there through college. My wife (Boulder, CO native) is just generally awesome so naturally she’s a Timbers fan. We hope to make it back to PDX once we’re done with school.
I'm interested in the Las Vegas article,
there’s no other sports to compete with (except UNLV) but could it compete with the strip? probably, I don’t know how popular soccer as a sport is in Las Vegas. Anybody? I still think though, that for the MLS to be a top tier sports league in the U.S. it needs a presence in the south east, but who knows if that will happen.
Mike Rice: "Camby nearly rejected that with his Armpit!"
Mike Barrett: "Now that would be a fragrant foul."
I don't know about Vegas...
I have family from there and they’re not soccer fans at all (anecdotal I know).
Still it seems like Las Vegas has far too much of a transient population (tourists) to really support a major league team, especially a soccer team which is still struggling in many areas of the US.
I think were Las Vegas given an expansion team it would be a flop.

Sounders reserves
That term is used loosely. They had 4 guests players because they could not field a full team with reserves, too many played on Saturday! :)
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
I hope they know what they're doing with the aggressive expansion.
It does worry me a little.

MLS has shown that they know how to grow a league slowly though
They are doing it right this time, unlike in the NASL days.
Also, there are still single seats available to the Sounders game in July

No, that game and the home opener were the first 2 to sell out, in like 20 minutes.

Incorrect sir!
I just logged on to Ticketmaster and found one seat in 119. I would not be at all surprised to find single seats available throughout the stadium – not many, but still.
wow
I was wrong. I seriously thought they were all gone….

They are "sold out"
if you want unobstructed viewing.
Meaning, the least desirable seats are available.
THE FOLLOWING GAMES HAVE ONLY OBSTRUCTED VIEW SEATS REMAINING:
FC Dallas – Apr. 17 @ JELD-WEN Field
New York Red Bulls – June 19 @ JELD-WEN Field
Seattle Sounders FC – July 10 @ JELD-WEN Field
L.A. Galaxy – Aug. 3 @ JELD-WEN Field
Vancouver Whitecaps FC- Aug. 20 @ JELD-WEN Field

Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Considering that FC Dallas is still listed, I would believe that list hasn't been updated.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I think Ticketmaster would have to tell me the tickets are obstructed view
and they didn’t. (although don’t put just missing that information past me). Or maybe they don’t.
But even obstructed view, I want to be there.
