No Excuses
"'We’ve always said from day 1 that they arrived in Portland, ‘don’t make excuses,'" Spencer said. "’If you’re out there and you’re on the field and wearing a Portland Timbers jersey we expect you to play well and win the game. Different teams maybe have different philosophies, I don’t know."
Doesn't look like Coach Spencer took too kindly to Seattle's postgame attitude. I like his style.

I would love to see the coach that says "I don't really expect you to play all that well and it's fine if we don't win"
well that sure was an interrupted thought
The body of that comment was supposed to say “oh wait I just did”. If I were a Sounder fan I’d be mad as hell right now at Sigi.
Fightin' Words
The next time we go up there we’ll take plenty of towels for them so we can dry off the field before the game. Maybe take plenty of tissue paper so they can dry their eyes after the game.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I loved that qoute!
Spencer > sigi.
Mike Rice: "Camby nearly rejected that with his Armpit!"
Mike Barrett: "Now that would be a fragrant foul."
Are you sure?
Sigi is a pretty big guy!

Portlanders know:
It’s all about quality, not quantity.
Be it:
Attendance
Coach Weight
Or points in the standings
So...
You prefer “quality” points?

Pay attention.
One point on the road? Sounds like a quality result to me.
One point at home? Poor, poor things…
The coach disagrees
He says if you are out playing on the field you are expected to win, not tie.

Normally I shy away from coaches who talk like that
See Ryan, Rex.
But in this case, I feel a strange urge to cheer. I really like the no excuses philosophy, it’s nice to have a coach put such a premium on responsibility.
Hey, You're not dressed for an afternoon of Tchaikovsky and heavy petting!
Coaches are
some of the most hypocritical, slogan spewing, people in the world. If Spencer is around long enough for the Timbers to go through a spell like the Sounders are with injuries, I am willing to bet money he has about 5 sayings that will go exactly against what he said today.
The same holds true for Sigi. Hell Sigi contradicts himself with nearly every answer. He starts every sentance with, ‘yeah, nah’ or ‘nah, yeah’. Which is it?!?!

I wouldn't be to sure about that
Remember earlier this year when we had 3 games in 7 days and we lost becuase we didn’t play our starters… he didn’t blame that on the loss. He said he expects to win with whoever we put on the field, and we just didn’t play well enough. That would have been the perfect time to make an excuse

I loved
"I think we’re going to call the league as soon as this training is over and ask them to deduct (other set pieces scored around the league) because it seems Seattle is not happy that teams can score goals from set pieces," he said.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
What is so great about that?
I think spencer has some valid points but attacking sigi for that is stupid. Sigi was basically just complimenting the Timbers. He said they are good at set pieces. What is wrong with that. I wish the Sounders were better. We took almost a full season to score off a corner kick!
Sigi was not saying set pieces should not count or count less, he was saying Timbers are good at them.

Actually if you listened
sigi basically said all the timbers do is knock it long to their big guys who get fouled and then they make set pieces.
He was calling the Timbers divers
Never mind that his team has the highest fouls against in the league…
It must be everyone else.
Not according to MLS stats
Ahead of Portland in fouls suffered: LA (158), Columbus (153), Vancouver (144), Dallas (142), Colorado (139), Toronto (133), New England (127), and then Portland (123) with 3 teams at 4 fouls or less behind.
Although if you want to flip it around. Seattle does unfortunately lead the league in fouls committed. A big change after spending 2010 and 2009 in the middle of fouls committed and first for fouls suffered.
So it couldn't have anything to do with the fact
That 8 out of 13 goals by the Timbers have come off of set pieces?

He is the opposing coach
so he is not going to sugar coat it, but essentially he was saying you guys are good at getting and converting set pieces. I am not sure why that is taken so offensively.

Sigi expected his players to
go out and win too. That is why he is disappointed with the loss. spencer seems happy with the tie. Seems to go against his own philosphy.

I love your sig
Scoreboard/regular season: 1-1.
Tiebreaker is away goals.
Advantage Portland.
Your move, Seattle.
Not in MLS
Way to prove the superiority of Portland fans’ knowledge, chief.
Oh, you're right, czar.
Timbers win the tiebreaker with most wins. I keep forgetting that though Timbers and Sounders have the same amount of points, the Timbers have games in hand.
So that’s an even bigger hole for Seattle, huh?
It is what is important to me
whether the sounders are leading it or not.

"Of the four players [Schmid] mentioned, three of them wouldn’t have made the [starting] team anyway." - Spencer
You all had better hope Spencer has NO say in any new signings for Portland this Summer, what with his eye for talent apparent brain damage.
La Vecchia Signora Forever!
I think you highly overrate guys like OBW
Understandable, but would he really be on the pitch ahead of nkufo? Zak is the only clear loss. Sorry about that, btw, never fun to see a great player out. But OBW? I wouldn’t trade anything for him unless he shows something, though I’m happy they caught that clot. Scary thought.

If I remember correctly
OBW clocked the fastest speeds on the team after Zakuani and the Sounders are clearly laking speed (Although Jaqua is taller). OBW also seems to chase more down the Jaqua.
Rosales has been an amazing play maker in recent games and a clear starter.
Friberg would most likely have been a sub but is capable of starting and would have been a good sub for when Evens went down (and according to your own Geoff a player to watch out for because of his recent hot streak)
OBW was the leading guy for us in that position
Whether he is ‘great’ or not, not having him is hurting the quality we can put out in our starting 11. We still expect to win without, but it hurts not having him.

I understand the sentiment
And I’m sure I was making similar comments/excuses on this site during the Timbers’ early season struggles about needing Perkins, Nagbe, Zizzo and Horst to get healthy. Totally normal for a fan to do that. A coach, on the other hand, would probably be wise to avoid indulging in that type of excuse-making.
OBW probably wouldn't be a starter on Portland
Nor would he have been one if Nkufo hadn’t left. He’s still shown some flashes of brilliance, and in particular, had a string of three or so matches where he was the best player on the pitch. It was looking like he might turn into a good-bordering-on-great TF for a few weeks there, before his career got sidetracked by injuries.
Anyway, I can see him claiming OBW and Friberg as not starters (Friberg isn’t a regular starter on the Sounders when we’re completely healthy), but he’s completely batty or hasn’t done his research if he wouldn’t be starting Rosales.
OBW may not be back to a starter
But Nkufo unfortuantely was gone form day 1 which made OBW our starting TF. If you want to say he is not a starter, then you have to add Nkufo to the list of people that we have lost.

Why this hand wringing about set pieces?
At the end of the season, the only thing that will matter are points, not goals scored in open play versus goals scored on set pieces. In related news, possession by itself with no end product is about as useful as tits on a bull. You can ask Arsenal fans (and Sounders too, apparently) about that.
Put it in a slightly different context
if you’re a baseball fan,. do you want to follow a team that only scores runs via the home run? As a basketball fan, do you want to follow a team that only shoots 3-point shots?
Scoring from open play is important because open play is the majority of the game. I’m glad the Timbers are good at set pieces, but they need to (and will) get better at scoring from open play, too.
That's reasonable
and on the whole I agree with you. I support Fulham in the EPL and they are a fairly balanced team that is fun to watch. However, I feel like Portland, at least this year, needs to fight and scrap for every point, regardless of pretty play. As you say, that will come but for now I’ll take the points however they come.
