The Lumberyard 5/30-6/5: Memorial Day Edition
Rough game last night. There's really no other way to put it than that. The guys got what they thoroughly deserved in my opinion. They gave a lackluster effort and went back into the locker room with nothing to show for it. Perhaps I'm being a little harsh, but it's been a slow build up to this since the Philadelphia Union game.
Which leads me to today's topics of choice (there are two!):
1. How do you deal with the loss of your favorite sports teams? Usually I like to blame the refs (in my head) and be done with it. I know, terrible habit, but it makes me feel better. Last night was a little different I think. Also beer helps...
2. What are your plans for today, assuming you get Memorial Day off? BBQ, beer, Rose City fair? Let's hear em! Memorial Day is over! What DID you you?

Da Rules:
The Lumberyard is here to give the entire site a place for true non-soccer conversation and random thoughts. Its purpose: A place where people can come and chat about all the stuff that doesn't fit in with the rest of the site, and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal of the Lumberyard is to foster community; to let people get to know each other outside of the everyday front page posts. There will be happy ones, sad ones, ones like a sharing circle, and ones like an open mike night at the comedy club. In the Lumberyard, people really have a chance to become a family.
So, if you have a one-off thought, post it in here. The rules are basic, and are as follows:
- Ad hominem (personal) attacks will never be tolerated.
- Everything you write is visible publicly, so be careful.
- Don't use the Lumberyard to call out or talk about users from other threads on Stumptown Footy.
- Remember that every image posted will slow the thread down, so try to post as few as possible. Posting a link to an image you want to share is an acceptable alternative, and thus can share as many images as you wish without slowing down the thread. If you do post an image in the thread, please post something in the subject line so that the image stays mimimized.
- Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!
Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.

I deal with losses by putting them behind me and looking forward to the next game
I spend about an hour in a funk after the game, but then I can put it in its little box in my brain and try to never open the box again. Plus, beer.
No real plans for today – I do have the day off but purposely chose to do nothing. We’ve had a crazy last month or so and it’s really nice to just have a day to chill and do nothing. Plus, beer.
I got there late, but the Rogue Garage Sale was pretty good to us – got a case of Chateau Dirtoir (black lager) bombers for $19 and a case of Double Mocha Porter bombers for $24. And pint glasses and a hoodie. It’s probably pretty much decimated by now but if you’ve got nothing to do go to a Rogue near you and see what they have left.
Growing up rooting for Pacific Northwest sports teams, I've been conditioned for both painful and/or repeated losses.
It’s pretty easy for me to just move on and go forward in life. Losses happen (regularly).
I’m going to go cover a Memorial Day event at the pioneer cemetery on U of O’s campus, make some touch-ups to that feature story (I have some interviews to add), and then run a huge feature on the cemetery for Tuesday’s paper. (Incidentally, it’s also what amounts to my last final, so I don’t even have to worry about that.)
Then, I have a couple of stories to go edit for the newspaper, and then one last piece of homework before this term (from hell) is functionally over for me.
It’s so close, I can taste the celebratory Deschutes sitting in my refrigerator.

Dealing with losses is variable for me.
It depends on many different factors for me. Probably the biggest of these is whether I was at the game and how important the game itself was. If there was intense media coverage around the game, then I will avoid ESPN until I feel the reaction to the game has blown over, which can be hard sometimes (i.e. Oregon losing in the national championship).
If it is for my college (I am a Grad Student at Concordia in NE Portland), I have a bit of a harder time because I generally know the players on the teams and since we have become relatively dominant in our conference the past few years, we expect to win and go deep into the playoffs.
Overall though, I try to move on pretty quickly since I probably have homework to get back to.
As for Memorial Day, it was also my brother’s birthday and we went to the Reserves game. It was a decent game and there was enough of a Timbers Army there to get quite a few of the chants going, though without the Capos and the Drum Corps they died out relative quickly, but the players seemed to appreciate the support.

When did Oregon lose the National Championship?
I have no memory of this, so it didn’t happen.

I dont really either
That night was essentially a Jagermeister haze. Sadly though my non-UO friends were very happy to talk about for the next week or so.

For me...
1. It depends on the situation, as well as the sport. Football, each game is so critically important that each loss weighs on me. While there are more matches in a season for soccer than there are football, I think that the result is fairly the same. Basketball, some losses hurt more than others. A loss against a good team hurts less than an unexpected loss to one of the cellar dwellers. So really, I take it in stride when possible. The losses you anticipate are the ones that are most easily dealt with.
2. For my Memorial Day celebration, I: played Pokémon Silver on my Game Boy for hours (don’t judge, they’re fun games), then went shopping and bought a rosemary plant and seeds for basil, oregano and catnip, had a late lunch at a new Mexican restaurant near my weekend job, and finished off by going over to a friend’s house with a co-worker for a couple beers and a barbeque, consuming one brat. Came home and played some more Game Boy, and fell asleep late.
Blazers win!
Concacaf in flames

Discuss! [Actually, what is there to discuss? We know they’re corrupt and Blazer is coming out of this like a hero.]
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
UPDATED- Here is a statement released by CONCACAF, stating that Austin was NOT authorized to fire Blazer:
Today an unauthorized declaration was made by Lisle Austin attempting to remove Chuck Blazer as General Secretary of CONCACAF.
This attempted action was taken without any authority. Under the CONCACAF Statutes, jurisdiction over the General Secretary rests solely with the CONCACAF Executive Committee which has taken no action. Further a majority of the Executive Committee Members have advised Mr. Austin that he does not have the authority to take such action.
Chuck Blazer continues as CONCACAF General Secretary and with the full authority of his office. The Confederation continues its normal operations including the Gold Cup commencing on June 5th at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Crazy
I’d like to think there is hope, but the system is probably too far gone. Even if an outside candidate won, it would stay corrupt, if not get worse. Nice that Blazer survived though. Amazing that the guy thought he could get away with firing him.
I can’t decide whether 40k a vote is too high or too low. Either way, here’s to Jack Warner’s early retirement.

The sooner every world soccer federation blows up, the better
It will take a meltdown of epic proportions for any change to be made in the world governance of soccer, and I can’t wait for that day. FIFA, UEFA, CONCACAF – they’re all corrupt, they’re all unanswerable to anybody (except FIFA) and not a one of them acts for the overall good of the game.
But Apparently there is more
The bizarre situation was then exacerbated when Austin released a statement which rubbished the media release from the federation, and said legal advice was sought before Blazer’s removal.

Nice Questions
1. Depends on the team/how it went down. Generally I do ok. Being from Boston and growing up just long enough ago to remember a decade of beatdowns helps. Even after the Patriots blew 19-0 I basically just went for a walk and was fine. 4th and two, on the other hand, was brutal. The only thing I hate more than fourth quarter collapses is making Peyton Manning look good. Worst all time was the 2003 ALCS. I still haven’t recovered my love of baseball, really. For the Timber’s loss? Not much, it was going to happen, good to get it out of the way. Besides, we can always start a new streak. Now if the Sounders win, that’s another matter.
2. Memorial Day Weekend: Allergies and homework, cause that’s how I roll.

For those of you who might be interested in such things
the Timbers Army Merch Van has announced that they’ll have ~1800 No Pity scarves for sale before the match on 6/11. Game’s at 7.30 and I believe the van will be there starting at about 5 or so. First come, first served, one per buyer, $10 each.
Now that news has come out about Stumptown Coffee Roasters selling out to some interests outside Portland, I have a confession make.
