Timbers Tid Bits: New Leaf Edition
Yesterday was certainly an eventful Memorial Day for many MLS fans as two teams decided to ditch their respective head coaches. Our friendly neighbors to the north, the Vancouver Whitecaps, bid adieu to their long time USL coach Teitur Thordarson and the Chicago Fire opted to seek out a different direction than where Carlos de los Cobos was taking the team. Both clubs are now being run by interim head coaches.
I'm very happy the Portland Timbers' season has fared better. While I don't necessarily believe the Timbers FO would be as shortsighted as maybe Vancouver is being, I'd still hate to think that Spencer could lose his job at any moment were the season to not improve. He's a great coach who doesn't give the media, fans or the players the run around. I can respect that.
Anyway, on with the day's news!

I think since Spencer's a new head coach he wouldn't be fired mid-season even if the Timbers were to be worse than they are
Thordarson had been at Vancouver for long enough that they could judge his MLS experience against his USL experience and see that something wasn’t working. Still sucks for them that he was fired so fast though.
I'd bet someone a beer
either Thordarson or de los Cobos ends up at one of the other clubs. That seems to be how it works. Or maybe in a couple weeks we’ll see Vermes on his way out…to Chicago or Vancouver.
I would hope Vermes stays
with Sporting KC.
Playing a half season on the road is going to be challenging for any team. I called it back in January that they were going to struggle. If Vermes gets ousted for it, that’d be a shame.

That is true
But this looks to be his third season without KC making the playoffs, whereas they made it the two previous with Onalfo.
I would hate for him to be sacked too, he is a good coach. This is just one helluva schedule to start the season out on.

SPorKC rumblings have mentioned no intention to sack the manager yet.
Since they do recognize he hasn’t even played at home, and when they did for the USOC, they spanked the Revs 6-1 I think.

Props
DCU fan here, props to Portland for the green and black “Keep United in DC” banner during the game, very refreshing and classy after a season full of “Baltimore United” banners.
And in turn, sir, props to you and the Barra Brava
the DC traveling section was great. That’s the first time I’ve seen the away supporters section at JWP be full of flag-waving supporters. They (were you there?) may have been singing too, but since I sit at the other end of the field next to the TA I couldn’t hear anything else. Still, it was nice to see some organized traveling support.
Barra
Member of the Barra but wasn’t there, definitely want to make it out to Portland for a game, looks like a great atmosphere. Would love to see DC with a new, sold out stadium (and I fully believe that with a SSS DCU would sell out most every game)
DC United...
is an institution in MLS. For it to be sent anywhere else would be a damn shame.

Returning favors after the "Portland 2011" banners in RFK.
And as a brief transient of the DC area, with my DC United scarf, I do not want to see my first MLS club be anywhere else.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I want to see a full stadium
and if it takes moving it to Baltimore, then I am for it. Not saying that is the only way it will happen.
And moving to baltimore is better than moving across the country, at least DC fans would still be able to attend.
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
Having lived in Fairfax and Loudon Counties
No. Those people will never attend a Baltimore match.
I could add all people from Prince William, Arlington and Alexandria counties as well pretty easily. Wikipedia tells me that is around 2.6 million people [but of course population doesn’t equal popularity].
