Timbers Tid Bits: Quarterfinals Edition
Well the USMNT made it. They're officially going to the Quarterfinals of the Gold Cup despite, what I thought, was a pretty lackluster performance against Guadeloupe. While Jozy Altidore's golazo was amazing and worthy of recognition in its own right, the rest of the game's blunders will continue to be the talking points heading into the next game against Jamaica, a game that I'm not confident the current US squad can win.
More on that later. For now, enjoy the news!

KeyBank Inaugural Goal Flip Book
Uhm….. is this cool?
I can see wanting to “memorobilia”-ize an important piece of MLS Timbers history, but I would think they could come up with something a little better.
Am I missing something?

I must say that the Timbers are not the best at memorial merch up to this point
Part of the “benefits” of being a season ticket holder, we were told, was a “special Axe Society commemorative gift”. They didn’t say what until about a month ago, when we were told it would be an opening-home-game ticket encased in Lucite. Kinda neat, right? Uh, well, sure. It’s a ticket from that first game, sure, but where the seat info is, instead of being personalized, it says AXE SOCIETY MEMBER in big bold type. Just looks kind of cheap.
I’m not really into getting swag like that anyway, but it I was I’d be pretty disappointed.
Broseph...
doubting the boys like that?! Clint’s gonna come out with fire next game, he’s not gonna be a goof ball like last night. Here’s to the Mexico clash!
Yeah... it's brotastic
"I have something 95 percent of all those All-Stars only wish they had: a World Series ring. If I had to choose between that and being an All-Star, it would be no contest. I’d grab the gold ring and never look back." -Tim Salmon
Yep. All day.
Tried to go as corny as possible with that one. Wanted to draw some attention and I guess it worked. Was just trying to make a point to not give up on the squad.
Ey, pdb, you were right though when you said about a month ago that you were worried about our offense and their inability to score from open play. Credit due my friend. I was quick to dismiss thinking we would get our act together, but it hasn’t happened. Perlaza doesn’t look like he wants to take people on when he gets the chance to do so always veering away from goal. Coop played better last game but was really getting owned in the air (given he had a knock on his noggin).
Good call on going for the scalped tickets over the inflated prices online. You can always cop a ticket if you go that route, especially after the opening whistle like you said.
Dempsey was gassed from the opening K.O...
..and should have never played in the 2nd half. Hope he’s got some left in the tank for Sunday.

What timing!
I am in the DC area right now and have a chance to see the US quarterfinals this Sunday. Lowest tickets run at $56 on Ticketbastard and $80+ on Stubhub. Hmmm…
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I'd take the chance and try to get scalper tickets on the day
especially if you’re not as concerned with seeing the first minute or so. Scalpers usually fire-sale seats once a game has started because shortly thereafter their perishable inventory perishes.
Well, I'm not going.
Instead my wife landed tickets through her high school alumni organization to the Nationals/Orioles game that same day.
Oh, and they were provided by some company called Exxon, and they’re box suite seats. :)
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Unfortunately, Exxon is a Northern Virginia based company.
And the stadium I’m going to is the Nationals Ballpark. Or “We-fleeced-DC-and-screwed-our-winning-soccer-team-out-of-a-stadium” park.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I've been there for games twice, but don't remember much that distinctly
told me it would be described as “gorgeous.” There may be one spot where there are great views, but I think you have to be pretty high up.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.

You find the all star game a waste of time AND you want to help Jewsbury get on the team? I agree that the game is a waste of time and therefore advocate we help make sure all the galaxy and red bull players get on the team. That is who the powers that be want on it anyhow!
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
All star game != team
Of course we want our captain recognized for the job he’s done. Doesn’t mean the game isn’t stupid.
Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!

but by recognizing him,
you put him on the team and make him play the stupid game which hurts the team you care about.
And really I do not get why you need the recognition?

I don't think by posting that article he was advocating it.
He was just posting Timbers-related news, and that happened to be something out there
Blazers win!
Eh?
I just post the links. I’d sooner not have any Timbers on the All Star game if it interferes with a match. If not, then I’m pretty nothing about it.

I am very excited for Sunday
the last time I saw Thierry Henry play in person was this match. My last memory of that match was several Arsenal players having to pick Henry up off the turf because he was inconsolable after his series of misses at the 1:00 mark, the last of which was a whiff that would have been a goal had he connected.
Losses don’t usually stick with me, but watching that replay again still really depresses me. It was a great day out, shame about the result. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing one of my top 5 all time favorite players in person again, and as much as I love him I hope he leaves crying this time too.
On a related note, F*** Stephane Henchoz abd F*** Michael Owen.

In attendance at last night’s Rev’s match. There is no excuse for that, especially at this point in the league’s growth. Someone needs to be held accountable.
They play in Foxboro which is not convenient to anywhere in New England except Foxboro
and in a stadium that isn’t designed for them. They will never draw well until that changes.
There is something about the Stanley Cup's 7th Game with the Boston Bruins that affected attendance.

I'm pretty tired of people complaining about the artificial surface,
I went to cleveland high school and I’ve played soccer all my life and Cleveland has one of the nicest turf fields in the state, and its better for soccer than any grass field I ever played on. And our field probably wouldn’t even get a fifa rating. I can understand if they were complaining about Shittle’s terrible turf, but most people who complain about turf have clearly never played soccer, or are too lazy to do there research. Because if they did, they would realize that now, in the 21st century, there isn’t much difference between an artificial turf and grass. It just bugs me that all there arguments against it are from like 1994. Yeah, we get it, turf was terrible when you got into soccer, but the rest of the soccer world (including players) have moved on. Anyway thats my rant, the only downside to turf is that teams like Man City won’t play on it, but they’ll catch up eventually too.
