Timbers Tid Bits: Gold Cup Edition 2 - The Sequeling!
I know, I used this edition for yesterday, but it's just as applicable for today as the US Men's National Team takes on Canada today in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. I don't want to sound arrogant, or anything like that, but anything other than a win tonight will be not only a disappointment but an embarrassment. I have high expectations for our guys in this tournament and fully expect them to make it to the Finals.
Anyway, here's the day's news. Enjoy!

Not directly Timbers related but given the circumstances I thought some might be interested.
JELD-WEN size complaints are just excuses
They really are. Jeld-Wen is no smaller than many of the EPL's stadiums.

Canada drop pretense, want revenge vs. US
I'm going to say it right here, a loss to Canada would be embarrassing. No offense to our Canadian cousins, but I have high expectations.

We could really use a Le Toux or Mwanga right now.
Bedoya officially replaces Feilhaber on US roster
Bummer for Feilhaber who was on the roster, but was recently injured.

Minor nit to pick
Including the three newly promoted teams, JWP is the same size as only one current Premier League team – Stoke City. Every other Premier League pitch is bigger – they’re all around 114 yd long by about 74 yd wide.
It’s still an excuse to say the pitch either helps or hinders Portland, but I will say that when Arsenal moved to their new stadium it took them about a year to adapt their style of play from Highbury, which was still wider than JWP (110×73), to the Emirates which is 114×74. So there is definitely an adjustment to be made when switching from narrow to wide, or vice versa – but if a team is training to play Portland at JWP, they should adjust their training accordingly to train on a narrower pitch and STFU about it.
Hmmm
I haven’t checked them all, but I know Newcastles’s St. James park is also very close in size to JW.

You sure?
Wikipedia and this link shows it as 110×73.
In fact, that link shows a number of stadiums with playing pitches roughly the same size as JWF. Tottenham, Bolton and West ham all play on similar sized fields. Granted this article is from 2007.

what was KCs?
Anyone know what KCs size was? It seemed super narrow to the point it greatly affected play. Jeldwen seems narrow but not game altering narrow.
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
KCs and the Dynamo's current set up are
67 yards wide I believe. Maybe 65.

Attendance
Would love to see more packed into Jeld Wen, especially when we previously had crowds of 22,000+ watching soccer in the NASL. Would mean more tickets and a wider audience being able to come and support the team.

The team has repeatedly said they will almost never untarp the covered seats
I’m pretty sure they did their homework on what the optimal stadium capacity would be, and i’d much rather have 18,000 people inside and more that couldn’t get in than 18,000 inside and 4,000 empty seats every game. I think the size of the stadium’s about right.
Plus which, a lot of the tarped over seats are obstructed view.
I did some quick math
I did some quick math a few months ago and if you look at ratio of population in the metro area to stadium seating, I think both Vancouver and Seattle were higher. A lot more goes into it but i think it still shows that there is room for more seats in portland.
I think the math they did had much more to do with what they could do in the smaller footprint available than what was optimum.

Also
The concourses that were built in 1926 are half the size of the concourses in Vancouver and Seattle.

I have not heard much
But do you think paring played into it?
Scoreboards, not billboards.
Regular season, not pre-season.
This is the bigger issue
The team wanted to make sure that the stadium experience wasn’t a complete nightmare, and it’s bad enough in JWP with 18,000 people – I can’t imagine what shoehorning 22,000 people into the place would do to the already over-run concourses.
