Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Recap: Portland vs the Wiz

Quick Recap:

Portland once again has a horrific start to the game, giving up 2 goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. They continue to work and get one back before half but to no avail as the 2nd half has no goals. Portland goes down 2-1.

First Half:

True to his word John Spencer made two major changes to the starting line-up. Steve Purdy and Eddie Johnson were inserted for Kenny Cooper and Jeremy Hall. The first 10 mins already showed a world of difference for the Portland Timbers. Posession was there, great service to the forwards and even Diego Chara was able to join the attack with a long distance try in the 11th minute that was deflected out for a corner.

More after the Jump

Star-divide

Despite the added possession one mistake in the first 15 minutes once again led to an early goal against the Timbers. Eric Brunner tried to win a ball despite not having a great position to win and got turned. Which Sporting Kansas City gladly put the ball in the back of the net. It only got worse after that with a long throw in the 19th minute finding a wide open Aurelian Collin for an easy header into the goal.

After the second Goal you could almost see the team start to tighten up and get really anxious. Portland wanted things to happen and worked hard for it to happen but it didn't happen. lt was the definition of insanity, trying the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

As the first half progressed it became evident that the Timbers were lacking that link up between the Midfield and the Forwards. A dynamic playmaker, a number 10 if you will. The shell that goes around a true number 10 is there.

And yet just before half Kalif Alhassan won a free kick 40 yards out near the touch line. Then Captain Jack Jewsbury hit a great ball to the back post that the KC keeper had to punch clear. The ball fell to Darlington Nagbe at the corner of the box, which Nagbe settled beautifully juggled the ball to him self twice (I saw the replay in the MLS site) and hit a half volley that hit the far netting. Already I can tell you this, Goal of the week for sure, at the very least one that is going to be voted on. The goal brought the crowd back into it and gave Portland some momentum heading into the locker room.

Stats: Portland had 3 shots and 1 Corner. Sporting had 5 Shots with 0 Corners.

Second Half:

Both teams came out at a hectic pace trying to get another goal and this lead to some end to end soccer. With the best chance for a goal coming in the 51st minute when KC got to the end-line and hit a ball back across the box to a wide open player who luckily hit it in the direction of a diving Troy Perkins who stopped the shot with his knees. The rebound was then cleared away by Rodney Wallace.

Portland did keep up the pressure while KC looked to counter, the pressure almost got the Timbers a goal when Chara sprang Perlaza with a great ball into the box. Perlaza's shot was parried out for a corner by Jimmy Nielsen. 3 minutes or so later Eddie Johnson had a nice shot curl just wide of the goal.

Tempers really started to fray as KC really challenged the ref after almost every call. Which got the the ref to give some sympathy calls much to the chagrin of the crowd. 20 mins into the second half saw the return of Kenny Cooper to the pitch. On his first touch he did get a good header on goal but because the ball was coming from straight up in the air he got no power on the ball.

The Timbers second sub came in the 72 minute as Sal Zizzo came on for Alhassan. Since Zizzo came on it was almost as if the Timbers were all gassed and had tired legs. Balls seemed to miss their intended targets and balls sprang off the feet when trapped.

To counter this lack of energy James Marcelin came on for the goal scorer Nagbe. With Marcelin in the Timbers went to a 4-3-3 hoping to get the equalizer. This change exposed Portland and it showed when Perkins had to make a save in the 81st minute. On the second corner after that save Portland dodged a bullet when a volley went just wide of the goal. And again in the 83rd minute when a ball went through the box after a strong run down the wing from KC's Chance Myers.

Portland continues to battle until the final whistle and almost got the equalizer as Captain Jack hit a worm burner in the 89th minute that went just wide of the goal. In the end it wasn't enough as Portland couldn't pull it back. Once again a heart breaker at home.

Observations:

  • Rodney Wallace is still unsure at times and when he is unsure he just hoofs it the field and the Timbers lose possession.
  • After the second Wiz Score Collin ran over to the old Beer Garden area and took a drink of one of the fans adult beverages.... I wonder if there is a FIFA rule on that.
  • In the first half Chara seemed to sit too deep and Jewsbury to close to the forwards. This left a huge gap in the midfield which I will try and discuss more later.
  • Good to see the TA police themselves. An over exuberant fan(s) took umbrage to C.J. Sapong's goal celebration and threw some stuff at him. After that the TA chanted don't throw "stuff" on the pitch while pointing at the offending section.
  • For as much energy as Sal Zizzo has he needs to learn to notch it back a bit. He goes 0 or 60, he needs to find the 35 every once in a while.
  • Eddie Johnson distributes better than Cooper up front but can't handle as much physicality as Cooper can.

I was very encouraged by the second half

The first haf was appalling, a continuation of Dallas. But in the second half the Timbers showed some life, some invention, and some desire to not suck. This was an unpleasant loss but it didn’t feel as bad as last week.

Expansion team desperately seeking

an experienced attacking midfielder and quality defenders who can play in front of a suddenly jittery keeper. Otherwise, it’s typical expansion results that will be difficult to watch regardless of the stadium atmosphere. Tactically flood the midfield until help arrives.

I am supportive and I am on board for the long term, but the reality is this team will be lucky to win 10 games this year unless they make a big splash during the transfer window. Building for the future is the right thing now and I can be patient if that’s the plan, but they still need to win some games just to boost morale.

About the only thing to look forward to this year – the way the team is currently put together – is to hope for improvement and to build for next year because right now playoffs are a pipe dream.

Timbers quality of play of late has been regressing and that has me worried more than the losses. I was at the game and other than Nagbe’s goal the Timbers showed nothing tonight.

It's at the point for me where all I care about this season is a result next Sunday

The playoffs are becoming somewhat of a pipe dream. It’s frustrating, but as you say it’s a typical expansion team. If they lose to Seattle I will not be happy in the slightest.

A win against Sounders would be great

But right now I care more about the bigger picture and just want to see the team improve over time.

Got a chance to see the first goal as it happened

That rests squarely on Perkins in my eyes. He completely lost track of the ball and was miles away from being able to stop it once he got it back in his sights again.

Blazers win!

I agree, but he also kept us in the game with an excellent save

All things considered, I’m less worried about Perkins pressing than other things.

I dunno

The mere fact that our CB got turned so easily at Midfield which allowed the break to even occur has a lot to do with the goal.

Perkins did not have a great game but honestly I don't blame him 100% for that goal

As Ryan says, it never should have gotten to that point in the first place. I’m way more worried about Perkins’ clearances at this point – he’s not playing well right now, but he’s also the least of the Timbers’ worries in a lot of ways.

It is good to bring this up

because his goal kicks and passing needs to dramatically improve. Passing the ball back to Troy is an automatic loss of possession. The defenders have nowhere to go with the ball and instead of a long ball pass back to Troy, who then immediately launches a long ball to nowhere and the result is the same. Part of this is the other teams tactics, especially last night, and it’s up to Spencer to adjust to that. But still, Perkins must try to improve.

Not much else to say

Side note: Thanks for the updates in the game thread.

Your Welcome

I was really trying to liven the Game thread up as we have not been getting as much participation and I figured with someone at the game it might make it easier/more informative to participate in.

Re. Observations

“…Chara seemed to sit too deep and Jewsbury too close to the forwards.” IMHO it’s because Jewsbury isn’t an attacking, incisive-passing mid. Because he can’t probe defenses with accurate, on-the-ground passes, he seems to feel he’s got to go forward a be another target man for everyone behind him. Which leaves Chara with ALOT of work to do on his own in central mid.

Jewsbury does isolated good things in most games that paper over the fact that he’s not the Timber’s answer to a coordinating, attacking midfielder.

Eddie Johnson working really hard, with the skill set he has, is still not as dangerous as an involved Kenny Cooper. Sorry, it’s a fact.

Whoops, meant to write Chara' worked his tail off last night

Many times the center mid was left wide open in the way you describe and Chara’ had to scramble to shut the other team down. Without him last night would have been worse.

Chara workrate

Maybe I didn’t write my comment clearly… I was trying to indicate that Chara IS victimized by the area he’s left to cover in the middle.

The match for him is an endless round of putting out fires of our own making.

Eddie Johnson vs Kenny Cooper

The issue here I think is the fact that Cooper holds the ball too long while Eddie Johnson (of course the sample size is non-existence) seemed to get the ball off of his feet faster and thus helped the possession. The ball needs to move a little faster.

However Johnson got pushed around in the box while Cooper would never of had that happen to him.

This is something a lot of us in our section were talking about last night

Not Cooper specifically, but a lot of Timbers seem to think the sequence of events should be

get ball
think
move
pass

When in reality it needs to be

Get ball
move
pass

A lot of that comes from playing together over time, sure, but the Timbers right now seem too willing to try and think a play out instead of acting on instinct. Johnson was a little better than Cooper but gaining that innate understanding of where your teammates are likely to be and getting the ball there when the teammate is there is something the entire team needs to work on.
