Adam Moffat, Allocation Money being Traded to Houston Dynamo for Lovel Palmer, Mike Chabala and International Roster Spot [Updated]
CONFIRMED Update 2: It's being confirmed that the Portland Timbers have traded Adam Moffat and allocation money for Mike Chabala and Lovel Palmer. Multiple sources. I'm ready to call this deal done. Kenny Cooper (as was in the title previously) will not be traded to Houston.
Update 3: Portland Timbers have officially announced the deal which also included an international roster spot for the Timbers. Seems like a fantastic deal.
Time to power on the rumor machine as it's starting a little bit early this morning. Late last night, Ryan Gates posted a possible rumor at the two players possibly heading over to the Timbers, but for what he couldn't say. Today, I'm hearing that this might be a trade for Kenny Cooper. Here's why it makes sense.
First, Palmer confirmed he was being traded by tweeting "I'm going green." No he wasn't referring to his stance on environmentally friendliness, he was referring to being traded to either the Portland Timbers or the Seattle Sounders. His tweet has since been deleted, bit I assure you it was there.
Second, the Houston Chronicle has confirmed that both Lovel Palmer and Mike Chabala are off Houston's roster as of now. Meaning both were taken off at the same time... sounds like both are being traded away at the same time to the same place, if you ask me.
Third, our colleagues at Dynamo Theory, SB Nation's Houston Dynamo blog, have confirmed this morning that a trade IS happening with the Timbers and that two players will be going there. I don't know their source, but I trust them
Fourth, Kenny Cooper has been a hot rumor to get traded away so this would really not come as a surprise to anybody. It's Adam Moffat and allocation money not Kenny Cooper.
Fifth, Dominic Kinnear and John Spencer have a previous relationship so working out a lucrative trade between the two teams was probably easier than with others. Also Spencer probably knows both of these guys fairly well as they've both been with Houston for a couple years now. (Fun fact: Mike Chabala played for the USL Timbers back in 2006).
So, as you can see, evidence is building up. It's not yet enough for me to completely call this as confirmed, but I'd be damn surprised if it was anything else.
The singular hang up right now is if Kenny Cooper will get traded or not as I can't find confirmation on that, and whether or not he'll be going alone or if another player comes with him. Multiple sources are confirming it is Adam Moffat and allocation money.
I'll have player profiles up and ready to go as soon as the deal is announced.
UPDATE: Michael Orr, of Mao's Football Show, and other fans are pointing out that neither Adam Moffat nor Ryan Pore played last night when they usually do in those sort of games. Perhaps we could be seeing a Moffat and Pore trade for Chabala and Palmer. Kenny Cooper might be with us still for a while yet.

I would be surprised if it were Kenny
And if a deal had been worked out why would Spencer play him last night and risk injury? Why would he bother experimenting with Kenny in a new formation? If Cooper is traded the Timbers have to get a regular starter in return.
I think the updated is more likely
If they are hearing two guys, then I bet its Pore and Moffat. They would save cap space with that trade, and add some speed (relative to their other guys at least) up top, while we’d add defense, and only take on about another 30k in salary.
If Cooper is involved though, wow. Did we ever get fleeced. Neither Chabala or Palmer would be day 1 starters for us, and we’d trade them for guy who yes is rumored to be out, and hasn’t played all that well, but for a journeyman wide defender (making his second trip out here to wear the timbers green) and a young dmid whose alot like a bunch of guys on our roster.
They sat the guys that were traded though….I’d be shocked if we didn’t as well.
Just got word
That apparently its Moffat + cash for us. I think you guys will be happy with Chabala + Palmer, Chabala will be good as a wingback and Palmer played CB for the Jamaican NT, so definitely can help you there (we had him as a DM and it was a mixed bag…I always thought it was asking a bit much from him, much more solid at CB)
Good to hear Palmer can play CB
I was beginning to wonder why Timbers would bring in another DM when we already have Jewsbury, Chara, and Marcelin.
Moffat is a hard worker and has a good attitude. He plays scrappy in the DM role. I’m actually a little sorry to see him go, but our DM is very crowded.

This is the biggest question for me
Obviously Chabala adds some depth to the wingbacks (tho, from what I’ve seen of him, he’s not much better defensively than rodney, and is “positives” are that he likes to get forward from back there), but where does Palmer slot in for us. He might take Marcelin’s spot (he’s played more, and at a higher level in that true dmid spot), he might be a back CB, or heck, maybe we’ll try him outside ala Hall.
I'm working on this right now...
Speaking with the guy who runs Dynamo Theory to get some answers.

TBF
I don’t know if they are going to really know. From what I know, he’s never played anywhere else for Houston in a MLS match. However, maybe Spencer saw something he wanted to try up here. I think its going to take a few weeks to figure that out for sure.
On one hand, he’s probably a better passer than James, but I’m not sure if he’s as physical at the back, so what is it we really want from that position. Is he someone that can move even further back? Maybe? Out wide in a wing-back? Maybe? I think its going to take a few weeks to see where he settles out (or at least until next tuesday) to see what they are expecting.
Houston Chronicle Reporting Deal DONE!

Chabala, Palmer to Portland for Adam Moffat and allocation money. Deal is done. More Dynamo moves to come in this window.
They freed up 150k, we took back a dmid (who played some RB for Jamaica) and a depth wide defense player. eh? don’t hate it I guess.
Yeah, I've updated...
I also owe Mao, from Mao’s Football a beer. Haha!

Yeah
I said Kenny Cooper was being traded, he said he wasn’t.
I lost, obviously.
Although I found out about a half hour ago that Kenny Cooper was originally part of the deal… SO CLOSE!

It has to be us
if he was going to Seattle, he’d say “I need a highlighter.”
But in all seriousness, Moffat/Pore for those two guys makes more sense. Cooper is still too valuable to the team, especially for what we’d get in return.

if he was going to S**ttle
Blazers win!
I'm going to be severely disappointed...
If I don’t see this now. :p

Chabala has great hair...
His nickname by the Dynamo faithful was “Chewy” because at times his hair was so long it was like watching Chewbacca on the field. Either way, he is a great guy on and off the field, has one hell of a work ethic. It’s a damn good trade even from that standpoint. Hope you guys succeed with him in your lineup. You won’t be disappointed, but that’s my humble homer opinion.

Never really felt Moffat provided/did much
So a 2 for 1 right now with our depth severely lacking can’t be a bad thing.
Also Chabala played for the Timbers on loan in 2006
Chabala spent part of his 2006 rookie season on loan with the USL First Division Timbers, appearing in eight games with the Portland club.

Potential depth in the backfield.
Obviously not earth-shattering news, but it seems to be a nice, small move that will at least give the coaching staff some options to look at.
Still hoping for somthing kind of ‘big’ before the window closes…
