Recap: Columbus away and another deflating road loss
Quick Recap:
The Portland Timbers probably play their most complete road game of the year and score the only goal of the game. Yet they still lose 1-0 away on an Own goal.
First Half:
No one was able to see the first 10 minutes of the game because of technical difficulties but according to John Strong we didn't miss any goal scoring opportunities. For the next ten minutes if you tuned in to the game you would not have thought that the Columbus Crew was the team that was 1 win away from leading the Eastern Conference. Portland really passed the ball well around the pitch and were finding openings to spring players down the wings. However the 4-5-1 with Jorge Perlaza is not built for the crosses that result in that type of attack.
After the Columbus Crew weathered the pressure by Portland they started to exert their own will on the game and utilized their wings, Eddie Gaven and Robbie Rogers. Their attack almost came up with a goal as Lovel Palmer was beaten easily by Rogers, who hit a great cross but luckily no offensive player got on the end of it in the 34th minute.
Darlington Nagbe probably played his best MLS game as a Timber. His passing skill and ability to attack created a shot on goal in the 37th minute. He made a great pass to Diego Chara who hit it right back to him and allowed Nagbe to get just beyond the box where he hit his shot just wide.
From that play Columbus really started to awaken from a stupor and became a lot more physical, which the Ref let happen. and for the last 5 minutes of the half Portland, just like the Chicago game, they looked like a team just trying not to give up a goal. Luckily for them they did not.
Second Half:
The second half started like the first half ended with Columbus dominating the possession and getting more of the attack. Portland still had it's opportunities but none of them were that dangerous. With the momentum no on the Columbus side Portland was flirting with disaster and they almost gave up a goal in the 59th minute. Chad Marshall got a header on frame off a corner but Nagbe saved it off the line in what could be another Save of the Week for Portland.
However the great save was wasted as Portland really did not have another good attempt on goal until the waning minutes of the game. Columbus however put enough pressure on Portland that it got a goal line scramble which resulted in Mamadou "Futty" Danso putting in his second own goal of the year.
Portland's last gasp came in the 86th minute as Sal Zizzo made a great individual play to get by the last defender out wide. However the whole rest of the team was not with him, or they were on the ground like Kenny Cooper was, and his back pass went to a marked Captain Jack Jewsbury, who had his shot blocked easily by a defender.
Portland again loses on the road.
Observations:
- Palmer really played well on the right and his crossing was a little better than Jeremy Hall or Steve Purdy. The Defense looked a little better with both Eric Brunner back in and the addition of Palmer
- Nagbe looked like he is getting the hang of the MLS and if he combines with Chara like he was today Portland can be dangerous.
- Cooper did nothing today.....
- Portland has conceded 9, yes 9 goals in the last 15 minutes.
- Columbus has Cheerleaders, for shame.
- The play is slowly getting better but there is still lots of room for improvement.

Tough loss
Just really hard to take.

Great summary. At least if we play like today at home against Toront we can hopefully pick up some points. That really is a must win. SKC embarrassed them today.
Thanks for the recap. I haven’t really been for trading Cooper, and have been trying to focus on his potential for a while now, but that faceplant while Zizzo was singlehandedly carving up Columbus’ defense puts him on the thinnest of ice. He needs to start producing. I know he isn’t in an ideal formation, but he is supposedly a star, and right now he is providing nothing. I could understand less production, but he looks to be barely trying. Very frustrating. I don’t like judging a player’s work ethic, especially in Soccer where much of what they do is away from the ball and frequently off camera, but Cooper needs to put in a more visible effort. Or score. Hell, even winning a free kick would be a start. He also gave away the ball that nearly led to a goal if I remember right. Bad game.
On a more positive note, I totally agree with your assessment of the defense. Real progress. Nice to see.

Thoughts
Cooper also missed at least two runs where he could have helped Chara in the attack.
Am I the only one that thinks Zizzo should be starting?
Am I the only one that thinks Marcelin just isn’t good enough? He had a terrible match tonight IMO.
zizzo is a spark plug
I like his energy in the last 30 of the game.
Has cooper recieved one pass at his feet facing goal in the box. NO. Chara and Jewsbury are the least creative center Mids in the league, they can’t seem to make that last pass.
Nagbe has to play in the middle. He has the skill.

If Cooper could have stayed on his feet
He would have had a very good chance right in front of goal on a great Zizzo run as well.

Expansion team
Last night was a perfect example of what it means to be an expansion team. The team is so thin that substituting does more harm than good. When Columbus subbed, it allowed them to change their style of play and really make a difference. Portland’s subbing only made the team worse. Zizzo is good but exchanging him for Chara doesn’t make the team better. Using that formation, he would have been a better sub for Perlazza. Lowry? They just don’t have an impact sub until Dike is ready to go.
Sorry but another pathetic performance from Cooper. He wanders and wanders and ends up clogging the midfield play. Until his entry, the midfield had been clicking pretty well. Perhaps this was a trade showcase but it did no good for his value. He needs to be benched.
For only being on the team for two days I though Palmer played well. He’ll only get better and it’s the best that part of the defense has looked in a while.

No one can really be scapegoated for this loss
Except the manager. Cooper again was irrelevant, except when he was screwing up. But who put him out there at 46’ for Perlaza and as the lone striker? When Nagbe and Chara came off that was all she wrote offensively, save Zizzo’s occasional burst of speed up the wing but the one forward with the speed to get in the box and cause some trouble was benched at half-time for a strange reason. Again, was Perlaza hurt or something?
Spencer might be a good “coach”, e.g. drill instructor, motivator, and guy the players generally like. But he is learning on the job when it comes to game management. Yesterday he had a stinker. Someday he might be a great manager, but if the Timbers are going to get better he will also have to get better.
Perlaza didn't exactly do anything in the first half. Hes not a good center forward for a 4-3-3 either.
I think he makes a better withdrawn forward
Give him the chance to make overlapping runs and I think you will see a real jump in his play. The problem is finding him a partner up top who is both a credible striker and someone who possesses a modicum of passing ability. I’m not super optimistic, but if GW and Spencer can come up with something, then I think Perlaza can be a top level player in MLS.

A note of appreciation for John Strong
Listening to some other broadcasts from around the league remind me how lucky I am. I am 99 percent sure the announcer of the Colorado game asked for confirmation that a Red Card meant the player was sent off. And the guy from Chivas made Justin Braun’s hat trick embarrassing.
After the second goal: “Go Go Chivas USA. One is good two is better” And after the hat trick he actually let out a “you go girl Justin Braun”
I felt bad for the guy. Not meant to be a real criticism, all announcers have bad games, but Strong is one of the better ones.

The fact we have a true sports announcer and not just some broadcast filler is great.
Nor do we just have some local soccer analyst just because he played professionally.
John Strong is incredible as an announcer and is really doing better on the TV broadcasts than last year when his radio side was still getting across on TV.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
It's so true
We have an amazing broadcast team that really is dedicated to creating the best broadcast experience possible for the fans. I watch a lot of soccer (and sports in general) and there are so many announcers that don’t put any effort other than bad analysis and messing up the simplest of players names (i.e. ESPN).
I think that the problem that we are seeing with announcers is what you mentioned. Many teams simply employ former players hoping that they understand the nuances of the game. In a place like Portland though, where the understanding of the game and established soccer culture makes putting a quality announcer out there (and that is exactly what the Timbers have done).

Really seems to me that Zizzo and Nagbe both need to be on the field, but Spencer seems allergic to having them both in at once.
long live the jd.
Perhaps time to ditch the 4-5-1 experiment?
The offense looked fairly dynamic in the Seattle game, but since then hasn’t been creating many chances at all.
Marcellin wasn’t great yesterday, but has been good. But maybe it’s time to get back to something with more than one forward.

Maybe a 4-3-3?
Perlaza Nagbe and Cooper up top, Chara, Jewsbury and Marcelin in mid, and whoever proves themselves on defense? Yeah it takes away Zizzo and Alhassan, but they can be subbed, and I’m leery about a three man midfield with them instead of some kind of holding, distributing mid. Marcelin is the inferior player, but the better passer and facilitator. Can’t be that much worse than our ppm is now.

The 4-5-1 was put in to stop the horrible defensive bleeding
So far it has worked for that. Zero goals against Chicago and one own-goal yesterday. It would be interesting to see Chalaba get a try in Marcelin’s spot next week just to see. Also, using this formation has really freed up Chara to good effect. He got banged up yesterday and came out but it was the best I’ve seen him look.

Chara has skills
I think Chara is a very solid box to box MF who has vision and has shown an ability to put in great passes along the grass to a running Perlaza. I like the 4-5-1 and if Chabala can beat out Marcelin for a spot that is great. This formation can turn into a 4-3-3 more often at home when we attack as Nagbe and Alhassan (I would like to see Zizzo start one game in place of Alhassan) move farther forward.
Our team is playing better on the D side and I think on the offensive side the past two games we have had few chances but that is how you play on the road in MLS if you are an average (or below average) team like Portland is right now. You play tight for draws and try to take chances.
As to the longer term I think we have some solid young building blocks (Perkkins, Brunner, Horst, Chara, Alhassan, Nagbe, Zizzo, Perlaza) and our depth has gotten better with the Houston trade. I think we have a shot at a 8-10 spot this year and should make the playoffs next year. Not bad for a first year club I think.
