The Lumberyard: Oregon Brew Fest Edition!

My favorite time of the year is almost upon us once again! I am, of course, talking about Oregon's Brew Festival that takes place this year from July 28th-31st. I know last year was a bit cramped and hot during the weekend days but it is, in my opinion, worth it to take the time to experience all those delicious craft beers from around the nation.

That said, remember that there's a very important home game on Saturday so don't stick around for too long!

Discussion topics:

1. Are you going to go to the Brew fest this year? Anything specific you looking forward to? Here's the beer list.

2. How well do you think Lovel Palmer played in his opener against Columbus?

3. What other Timbers movements would you like to see before August 15th?

Discuss!

Da Rules:

The Lumberyard is here to give the entire site a place for true non-soccer conversation and random thoughts. Its purpose: A place where people can come and chat about all the stuff that doesn't fit in with the rest of the site, and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal of the Lumberyard is to foster c

ommunity; to let people get to know each other outside of the everyday front page posts. There will be happy ones, sad ones, ones like a sharing circle, and ones like an open mike night at the comedy club. In the Lumberyard, people really have a chance to become a family.

So, if you have a one-off thought, post it in here. The rules are basic, and are as follows:

  1. Ad hominem (personal) attacks will never be tolerated.
  2. Everything you write is visible publicly, so be careful.
  3. Don't use the Lumberyard to call out or talk about users from other threads on Stumptown Footy.
  4. Remember that every image posted will slow the thread down, so try to post as few as possible. Posting a link to an image you want to share is an acceptable alternative, and thus can share as many images as you wish without slowing down the thread. If you do post an image in the thread, please post something in the subject line so that the image stays mimimized.
  5. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.

Beer!

I probably won’t make it to the brewfest, because brewfest crowds give me hives, but if I were to go I’d focus on these beers:

1. 21st Amendment Hell Or High Watermelon. I had this the other day and it’s quite good – I’m not a fan of fruit beers really, but this is subtle enough that it’s not cloying.
2. Amnesia Dopacetic IPA. Had this last week too, it’s a really good IPA – even though it’s a double IPA it’s really well balanced and not just a hop bomb.
3. Anderson Valley Summer Solstice. I wouldn’t get this at the brew fest because it’s readily available at New Seasons, but it’s my favorite summer beer ever. This isn’t the best year they’ve had with it, but it’s still really good.
4. Blue Frog Ginger & Meyer Ann. I’ve been curious about this one for a while and have yet to try it – I’m not very knowledgeable about Belgian beers, but I want to know more.
5. Coalition Wu C.R.E.A.M. I love cream ales and have yet to give this one a shot, but Coalition makes good beer.
6. Dogfish Head Black & Red. I will make time for any beer Dogfish Head makes. They’re not all great, but I love their experimental, try-anything-once nature.
7. Lompoc Kick Axe. Timbers beer!
8. Three Creeks FivePine Chocolate Porter. I’m not crazy about porters – I hate the taste of coffee, and a lot of porters have a strong coffee aftertaste, but I’d try this one to see if the chocolate cancels out the coffee.
9. Salmon Creek Otus The Red. I’m a sucker for a well-made red, and I’ll try any red to see if it’s a good one.
10. Sierra Nevada Tumbler. I love brown ales too, and SN makes some good beer so it’d be worth a shot.

I’m generally not as much of a fan of summer beers as I am of winter beers, but this year’s brewfest looks like a pretty solid crop. Have fun if you go.

I work just a block away from Salmon Creek, and their beers are usually spot on

I’d want to try the Rogue 22, Full Sail Bohemian, Salmon Creek, and probably a few others. I’m not picky lol.

Ok, Salmon Creek wasn't the Salmon Creek I thought it was... completely different state

The Rogue was good, Full Sail was ok. Buzz Tent was out when I finally made it that far, which was a bummer cuz they had the 75th Anniversary Rogue Creamery Ale there, and I’ve heard that’s like heaven in a glass.

The Lagunitas was good too.

As for question two

Palmer got totally depansed twice, but otherwise I think he looked fine. With a new team, new position, a day or two of training, I can’t fault him much for being out of sync, and I’ll feel better about making judgements after the next game, but really after two or three more games. He did make a couple nice runs, and already looks like a much more offensively dynamic defender than Hall ever was.

According to Strong

He only had one 45’ training session of which only 21’ was of any consequence. With that alone I think he did great and I am really looking forward to see what he brings once he assimilates the Timbers system.

I too saw him get beat badly... But you are right no training with teh new team.

Plus he was probably scouting and prepping to play completely different players. Then your that your getting traded, have to fly to a new area and play the next day. No time to scout the players he was going up against. On offense he made some great runs, and had a couple rocket shots also. He seems like be very comfortable on the attack. Plus he seems to do a good job of showing possession out of the back rather than just hitting it to nobody.

The real beerfest was 2 weekends ago...

At the Portland International Beer Festival in the north park blocks. A fraction of the crowd and size of the Oregon Brew Fest, smaller lines, MUCH better beers. Often brewers break out their special kegs for PIB. Maybe I’m just a snob, but it seems like the people who show up to OBF want to get hammered and don’t really care much about what they’re drinking, people at PIB are there for the beer, and of course to get hammered. Some of this year’s standouts were, Stone’s Smoked Porter aged in Elijah Craig bourbon barrels, Firestone Walker’s “14” (bottle), Xbeeriment Black Force One, Great Divide’s Belgium Oak Aged Yeti (the ice cream vendor was making tasty beer floats with the Yeti), and the best named brewery of the weekend: Wayward Super Mega Nano’s Tandem-onium. Managed to get in 35 different beer samples over the weekend, my liver does not thank me. Sunday’s iffy weather was a real boon too, there were pretty much no lines all day.

I also dig the Organic Brewers Festival they have up at Overlook park, it’s a nice area and usually held during nice weather, though the beers aren’t usually anything overly special. Oregon Brew Fest and the Winter Brew fest just really don’t do it for me, it’s always a giant CF of yelling people waiting in long lines for beer I can pickup at any number of stores in walking distance of my house.

As for Palmer, I was watching from 4-4-2 and between all the commotion and amazing food, I didn’t really pay close attention to him. That being said, the defense as a whole seemed to play a lot better than I’ve seen them, especially in the first half. Someone was always there to strip the ball as it got into the danger zone. Don’t know how much of a hand Palmer had in that, but something sure seems to have changed.

Gonna miss the fest this year

I’ve got to go out of town for a wedding in the lovely heat of the midwest.
If I were attending I’d spend 4 wooden nickels on the Chainbreaker- Deschutes White IPA. I had this beer the other day and it is fantastic.

Here goes:

1) Nope.
2) Still haven’t seen the game because I keep having to work through them.
3) I’d like a movement somewhere up the table from here.

Still working at the ODE?

Or out of Eugene for the summer?

Still hanging out at the Ol' Dirty. I'm covering the Eugene Emeralds this summer, which has proven to be a ton of fun.

Other than that, I’m just constantly swamped with other stuff I have to do at the paper.

Sounds awesome, if a lot of work.

Still, free baseball games and Eugene summer weather. Nicely done.

Intensive summer program in Bloomington, Indiana

Which is about as fun as it sounds. The best part is the 11:30 pm start times for the Timbers games. And ESPN wonders why its ratings are disappointing. Who wants to watch MLS at 1:00 on a Saturday night/Sunday morning?

And I didn’t realize the summer there was a bust. Rainy? Or overcast and just cold enough to make wearing shorts/t-shirts uncomfortable?

On the other hand, I’m really missing the lack of humidity there.

Yeah

Rainy until July 5th ish. But now it is beautiful 80’s with no humidity :)

July 5th-ish my ass.

It didn’t start getting nice down here until last week or so.

Your right it was later than July 5th

It was overcast and just cold enough to ruin shorts.

Which, because I love shorts weather like few other things in the world, was unmercifully painful for me.

Ah, Eugene

Hope the weather holds for the rest of the season though. Not much better than summer baseball.
