The Lumberyard: Derby Edition 7/6-7/11

The gap between these has gotten out of hand!

Well Timbers fans, it's time for the biggest match of the year: #2 vs. the hated northern rivals down at JWF. For me, it's a first, and I'm lucky enough to be present for the ass-kicking that the Timbers will surely dole out come Sunday at 1 pm.

This Lumberyard is devoted to the following:

  • Favorite Cascadia Cup vs. You-know-who
  • Tips on how to enjoy matches vs. You-know-who
  • Anything else you wanna talk about too leading up to the match
  • Talk about the match afterwards

This is going to be a great weekend. If you want to be really nice, come stimulate the economy some and buy me a beer! (j/k, unless you really want to!)

Look for the secret message, and you'll see Da Rules after the jump!

Star-divide

Da Rules:

The Lumberyard is here to give the entire site a place for true non-soccer conversation and random thoughts. Its purpose: A place where people can come and chat about all the stuff that doesn't fit in with the rest of the site, and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal of the Lumberyard is to foster c

ommunity; to let people get to know each other outside of the everyday front page posts. There will be happy ones, sad ones, ones like a sharing circle, and ones like an open mike night at the comedy club. In the Lumberyard, people really have a chance to become a family.

So, if you have a one-off thought, post it in here. The rules are basic, and are as follows:

  1. Ad hominem (personal) attacks will never be tolerated.
  2. Everything you write is visible publicly, so be careful.
  3. Don't use the Lumberyard to call out or talk about users from other threads on Stumptown Footy.
  4. Remember that every image posted will slow the thread down, so try to post as few as possible. Posting a link to an image you want to share is an acceptable alternative, and thus can share as many images as you wish without slowing down the thread. If you do post an image in the thread, please post something in the subject line so that the image stays mimimized.
  5. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

Point of order

If this is a derby game thread, it’s probably not necessary to post the rules, the first of which is

“The Lumberyard is here to give the entire site a place for true non-soccer conversation and random thoughts.”

Just a thought.

by pdb on Jul 6, 2011 2:29 PM PDT reply actions

It's like a combination, really, of derby thread and Lumberyard

Might as well get conversation going somewhere. This site seems to me to be lacking in the community that I detect when fans get together in real life. Might as well build some community, and here’s a topic to get it rolling!

Blazers win!

Okay lets get this started

Things that annoy me:

1) People Driving slow in the fast lane
2) People who expect teachers to baby-sit there kids
3) Carnies
4) Those people holding signs expecting a hand-out from me, talking on a cell-phone.
5) Some Flounder fans, every fanbase has their annoying ones.

Your #1 is the single most annoying thing about living in the Northwest

I will never, ever understand why people in this part of the country think it’s OK to drive the speed limit in the passing lane. If you want to drive the speed limit, that’s fantastic – just do it in the middle lane or the right lane.

I would also expand your #4 to anybody in line at a store who can’t be bothered to get off their g**damn phones when they get up to the counter. A grocery or retail line is not the place to multitask – deal with what’s in front of you and talk on the phone later. Unless you’re walking someone through brain surgery on the phone, trust me, your call isn’t that important.

by pdb on Jul 7, 2011 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes
  1. could be expanded to the cell phone callers who talk loud enough for the 45 people nearest them to hear their whole side of the conversation! I hate that, keep it down, I don’t want to hear about your family dysfunction.

Don't even get me started on mobile phone etiquette in general

I have long believed that every mobile phone sold should be emblazoned with the words YOU ARE NOT IN YOUR LIVING ROOM all over the phone, in the vain hope that it will keep people from talking on their phones while on the bus or wherever. I really miss living in a city with an underground transit system because that at least keeps the damn phones quiet.

Less of it now with mobile text, Twitter, etc.

Or maybe I just finally adapted to it and it’s now white noise that I ignore.

Oregon drivers can't merge at speed either

Bicyclists are better at it.

  1. — In my neighborhood I’ve seen the same people asking for hand-outs at the same cross-streets or highway exit for three years now. Same healthy looking dog too. Saw one of them eating lunch at a Whole Foods once. They get picked up at the end of the day by a lady in a nice Range Rover or some luxury SUV. I’ve heard they make $1000/day. No way they could survive on the streets for three years where I live. It’s amazing how some people continue to fall for this sick street theater.

Are you kidding?

WOW FIFA should just admit there was a mistake and change locations. I for one would never even go to that World Cup no matter what.

I got the hall pass

My brother has a wedding in Black Butte at 5pm, so he “can’t coach” the game either. He had to ask one of the dad’s if he could fill in and the first thing the dad says was, “So you can go to the Timbers game?”

by Fanstand314 on Jul 8, 2011 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions

So I just got the following email from 107ist for people going to the game Sunday

(I hope they don’t mind my pasting it here in its entirety, but it seems appropriate)
=====
Sunday represents a huge day for Portland and the Timbers. The upcoming match against the Seattle Sounders will be the biggest and most intense event to happen at JELD-WEN Field to date this season. We want everyone to know that the expectation is there to show up, chant and sing, and participate fully on Sunday as well as have a good time doing so.

In order to make sure the day goes without problems, the 107ist leadership also has some other expectations:

Please DO NOT bring any Seattle supporters into the Timbers Army section even if they are your best friend, parent, sibling, lover, cousin, etc.

The Timbers Army section is for Timbers supporters only and away fans have their own section reserved for them. This is the case for every game, but it needs to be emphasized for this match in particular and understood that it will be enforced. Seattle supporters found in the Timbers Army section will be redirected to the away supporters section.

Please refrain from interacting with any Seattle supporters in and around JELD-WEN Field.
We realize everyone will be up for this match, but we mustn’t let emotions get the best of us. Direct your emotions in the form of support for the Timbers. Act accordingly in this regard and please make sure to spread the word amongst your friends and fellow supporters.

Follow the code of conduct for JELD-WEN Field.
As many of you know the Timbers Army polices its own section and values the trust the Timbers front office has placed in us to do so; this is a privilege that is not taken lightly. Realize that not following the code puts you at risk of being ejected from the match on Sunday, receiving a multiple match, or even a permanent ban from the stadium, as well as being banned from all organized 107ist away travel trips and other Timbers Army organized events.

Please enjoy yourself on Sunday. Support the boys on the pitch with everything you have and let’s all work together to make sure this is a memorable day for all of the right reasons.

When they say "refrain from interacting with any Seattle supporters"

I take it this is more on the physical side addressing alterations and what not? I personally have no intentions or desire to get into any kind of scuffle, but if you are walking with your crew and see some Flounder supporters, I would hope that at least gets a “build a bonfire” or “go home you bums” chant.

I understand they are doing their part in mitigating the potentially volatile situation, but that kind of stuff to me is all part of the rivalry.

by Fanstand314 on Jul 8, 2011 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Your second example is what they are referring to

Walking by a Sounder fan on the street? Just ignore him/her and move on. Because a chant started by a few people on the street can rapidly and easily turn into something physical. Especially right around the stadium, which is ringed with bars where people have been drinking.

Save the chanting for inside the stadium.

I don't like the Cascadia schedule very much

We see Seattle twice before we meet Vancouver, and not at all in the second half of the season (down the stretch would be nice). I’d like to see our Cascadia schedule a little more balanced.
Seattle has three of their four games in the first half, after this weekend they don’t have another match until October.
I guess Vancouver has it the best. They have two Cascadia matches in a row in October, which although unbalance, I think would be pretty fun.

True

They’re only the second team after Dallas that we’ve seen twice. Odd we get Seattle so early in the order of things.

I have decided that Abby Wambach is the female Jozy Altidore, Amy Rodriguez is the female Robbie Findley and (as many have noted) poor Amy Le Peilbet is the female Jonathan Bornstein.

The US’s only hope against Brazil is that Heather O’Reilly (who I think is the best USWNT field player at the moment and who sat out the Sweden game) and Hope Solo have monster games. Can’t say I really like their chances.

long live the jd.

I HATE THE FLOUNDERS

Something that just absolutely annoys me sooo much are a few of these guys I know. They are 100% Oregonian, are die hard Blazer and Duck fans but are Flounder Fans too. The only reason they like the Flounders is because they came to the MLS a couple years before the Timbers. I mean it just pisses me off so much! AHHHH!!! RCTID

Such a rare breed that I've never met one who fits that profile yet.

I do know a soccer fanatic from the Kennewick-Tri Cities area who certainly leans Timbers over his home state’s flahsy, overvalued “IPO.”

This probably doesn't count but

I’m a sounders fan who was born in Portland and moved to Seattle as kid and as a result I have always had a hard time rooting against the timbers…when they’re not playing the sounders of course!

Yeah that doesn't count

But I respect the fact that you are willing to admit that it is hard for you to root against the Timbers when they aren’t playing Seattle

Also I forgot to mention...

Why are there XBOX 360 advertisement’s at Jeld Wen? I know advertising dollars are big but you think the Timbers FO could find another company besides Xbox. With that I have also refused to touch my 360 this week, I can’t support the Flounders jersey sponsor during this week

Red Hot and Rolling

by BlazerFan88 on Jul 8, 2011 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Because X-box is a MLS sponsor too.

Pay attention to the ribbon boards and you’ll see Bimbo ads too.

An even better question...

Why is the timber’s jersey sponsor a seattle based airline? Doesn’t do much to help you guys avoid the “little sister” title the Sounders have given you.
