Timbers Tid Bits: Adam Moffat Edition
I never thought Adam Moffat would get his very own link thread on this site. No way, no how. He just never played a big role in the Timbers line up, or history... until yesterday that is. I'm not going to rant or rave about Adam Moffat and whether he really is as good as that strike he made. That's all up for debate. I will say that it was a damn good strike and a damn good goal. Kudos to him for being able to put that one in from such an incredibly distance.
Here's your afternoon news.

Ah yes, Uniglobe. Funny how the TA handles our 500 ticket allotment and a corporation handles Vancouvers.

Moffat's goal was great but it never should have happened
why on earth there was no one out there even remotely close to him I will never understand.
Yeah, there should have been someone closer...
…but really, that shot is kind of a fluke. If Moffat had stood up on a chair and announced he was planning to shoot from there, I’m not sure you don’t just back off and let him do it.
that is almost exactly what happened!
You could see as soon as he got the ball he was thinking shot. And why the hell not? I just don’t know why there were 10 Timbers in the penalty area and not at least giving some hint of a team that can hold its shape.
It was off a corner kick, right?
Teams tend to put ten in the box on corner kicks, and for good reason — lots of goals are scored on corner kicks, as we’ve seen this season. Moffatt’s was a low-percentage shot — 99 times out of 100, that shot sails over the crossbar for a turnover. So I don’t have a problem with the Timbers putting ten in the box for a corner and letting some delusional midfielder try a prayer of a strike from distance. Moffatt had some karma working for him, though, and he cashed it in.
Now, the other goal they scored, I have a problem with. And the one that just barely stayed out (if it in fact did).
I think the third goal/shot did in fact stay out
it was verrrrrrrrry close but I think it was a save.
Yeah, Moffat’s shot was from a corner, and the reason I’m annoyed in this case is that Houston is a pretty quick team, and packing the box like that leaves the Timbers vulnerable to a quick counter. Had they defended with at least one or two guys hanging back a bit (not a ton – just a couple steps outside the area, even), as they arguably should have, Moffatt never gets the shot. I can’t fault him for taking it and well taken it was, but the Timbers should have been in a position to at least make him think twice about it.
And yeah, goal #2 was thanks to some pretty shoddy defending. much more so than the first goal.
Zizzo was with Ching
but apparently figured there weren’t enough Timbers half-assedly guarding Davis, so Ching got to waltz right up to the goal line.

Good point, pdb
And I’m reminded of the strategy Club America used against us — If the defending team posts two players up field for a counter attack, the attacking team is usually forced to post three back for defense. We should clearly have had someone posted up field to help with the clearance.
I love the photo of Moffatt the mls site posted with the goal of the week video, especially when juxtaposed against the other nominees… http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/league/files/imagecache/620×350/image_nodes/2011/08/GotW_22.jpg
Wankouver fans
Are less than thrilled with the way Unigloble and their FO has handled their traveling tickets (according to various forums), so we should consider ourselves lucky that we have Joanne and the rest of the TA taking care of things.
