Timbers Tid Bits: Reserve Game Edition
When I read the report that there was going to be 10,000+ fans at the Portland Timbers reserve match this past Sunday I thought it was pretty cool. Little did I know that it was actually really cool. At least according to the dozens of news articles from seemingly every soccer site and newspaper in the USA. As such I thought I'd dedicate this link thread to it. 10,000 is a hugely impressive number for what amounts to a game that means little to the actual season.
Not to discount the players efforts in said games. Keeping the players fresh is 100% important. I was speaking entirely from a stats and standings point of view.
Enjoy the morning news!

I was literally born the day after the last match of the NASL era
and I was still raised a Timbers fan.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Dual promotions helped.
The 10K number is impressive, but remember that there were two ‘promotions’ helping this number along.
1. It was the Little Timbers Fan Club day. Everyone who bought an LTFC membership got two tickets to this match, and was very likely to show up because of the post-match activities.
2. There was a ‘Groupon’ 2-for-1 for this match plus snacks and a souvenir. With the insane popularity of the Timbers at the beginning of the season when the Groupon came out, this was a sure way of boosting attendance. There were 1700 of these packs sold.
It is still an impressive number. One of the links says that the MLS “thinks” this is a record for Reserve League attendance. Which is even more impressive considering many teams Reserve matches are FREE. (Although lots of those are at training facilities that probably couldn’t hold 10,000 anyway.)
Also, this Reserve match had higher attendance than the average attendance for the Earthquakes last year.
San Jose average attendance this year if you minus the one game at Stanford
is lower than 10,000. [I’m assuming]
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Yeah there's definitely some asterisks applied...
But as you said, many are free so the fact that the Timbers sold these tickets (in one way or another) is still pretty impressive, in my opinion.
What were the festivities fo the LTFC people?

Your post shouldn't be a "but remember", it should be an "and remember".
If two properly run promotions can help break a league record for a reserve match (maybe?), then imagine if Hunt/Kraft put in any type of effort to raise attendance at their stadiums. One of my favorite recurring quotes is the Kraft family insisting that they care as much about the Revs as they do the Patriots. Short rant over.
I love that Montreal is coming into the league, but...
I was just on the Montreal website and came across this awesome FAQ:
Q: Is MLS the league in which David Beckham plays?
Yes, David Beckham plays with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Each team may have on their lineup a maximum of three designated players whose salary is not totally included in the aggregate player earnings. Other great players also within the ranks of MLS: Juan Pablo Angel, Robbie Keane, Thierry Henry, Landon Donovan, Dwayne De Rosario and Freddy Adu.
That sounds fairly Soccer 101ish
There were a few articles like that ‘round these parts when the Timbers went MLS as well. Believe it or not, there are actually people who don’t know anything about soccer! Gotta teach ’em somehow.
Just saying
