Portland's Draft Did Not Impress Everyone
I really don't think the writer knows all the comings and goings of the Timbers or he would know a defensive signing is in the works. Still don't know how Vancouver is a winner.

Declaring teams winners and losers on draft day is stupid.
Especially in MLS, where such a small percentage of draftees work out. It’s more like baseball, where you can’t really effectively evaluate a draft until several years later.
Don't think there was a Strasburg in this year's draft.
I’m not sure there’s been a sure thing, “Strasburg” style pick that actually worked out since Zakuani.

I would love to draft

National sportswriters should never be taken seriously about things like this
They don’t know anything specific about a team’s draft strategy, they just look at the roster, see the holes, see that the draft didn’t fill all the holes, and scream LOSER. Ignore this stuff.

Also, the semi-arbitrary "winner" and "loser" lists generate a lot of traffic
Because they get linked to by blogs. Sort of like this.
The article is silly...
but Travis Clark is a very solid soccer writer that normally turns out good stuff. This article seems like a square peg in a round hole. No MLS team can genuinely fill starting lineup needs with the draft so to suggest that a team succeeded or failed on that basis is ridiculous (especially before the season has even started)
He's a solid soccer writer?
Because I’ve never heard of him and he didn’t show me anything in this article. Could have done a little research about Timbers in the International market too. That and he looks like a couch potato who could pass for a homeless guy. Seriously, when was the last time this Clark fellow ate anything green?

Agree the article is silly but....
I was about ready to jump for joy when our 27 pick came up and I thought we would land Hunter Jumper. I was disappointed with that pick.
Stumped this year about King as I was about last year about Chris Taylor
Both King and Taylor were both going to be available to choose to pick in the supplemental draft. We left the top left-sided defender on the board to take King.
Last year we supposedly drafted Taylor early because he was left-sided defender.
If good left-sided defenders are hard to find, why did we leave the best left sided defender in the draft on the board to take King?
Because the FO thinks Chabala and Taylor are good?

Although they may think that Wallace's future is in the midfield.
Also, I should think these things out before starting a while thread to communicate one thought.

King was in a couple of the MLS' pundits' mocks
Of course Borg also had Hoffman going first. So he wasn’t guaranteed to fall to the supplemental draft.
It’s hard to get very excited about him, and there were players who were certainly creating more buzz (and by ‘more’ I mean ‘any’)—but maybe this team is committed to wings who don’t get a lot of goals or assists.
I’m not crazy about the pick, but indications are Taylor could be solid, so I could be off base here as well and hope I am. And as we were discussing elsewhere, it was late in the draft. So I’ not happy about it, but I’m not really upset either.

No matter who ya'll actually drafted
The Timbers had one of the more solid drafts. Finally getting rid of Kenny Cooper and getting something of probable good value for a piece which never really fit the long-term Timbers plans is exactly what makes a Front Office a Draft Day winner. So Kudos to your Franchise and Front Office from a Dynamo fan, and long-distance fan of the Timbers.
Also MP is quite possibly my favorite MLS “Owner”. Very interactive with the fans, and I absolutely love it.
See ya’ll in a few months!

Thanks
I can say with all honest I was rooting for Houston to win MLS Cup.

Taking "best available" is not a draft strategy
Glad you agree! Thanks!
Another tidbit, if for some odd reason Backe and Soler change their mind about the draft and acquires another first round pick higher than Portland’s newly acquired slot, then the Timbers assume that higher slot.

More reason to show that blogger grades vary wildly
and why I think most are not great at it because I highly doubt these writers know more about the players than what was shown at the Combine.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Unless it's a specific blogger/journalist for a specific team evaluating only that team none of these grade things should ever be taken seriously
Seriously, none of these things are worth the time of people who seriously follow any given team. They’re all very generic and very uninformed.
I barely spent the time to read it all, just noticed only what he wrote about the Timbers
and found his logic to be as sound as runny jello.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Joe Mauceri knows more about these players than what was shown at the combine
His job is basically to watch a lot of college soccer games and evaluate the players. He has seen each of the college players play many times.
I think Kejsare's point is
The fact that each of them vary so widely that we as Timbers fans should not put a lot of stock in them
Joe Mauceri may have watched a lot of college soccer but does he know MLS teams and what each of them need?
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
He may have seen them play, but he doesn't persuade with reasonable observations, rather he conjectures.
Jean-Baptiste is a thick athletic defender who should not be allowed to touch the ball in the attack.
I think it is safe to conclude the CB will not be allowed in the attack that often.
He’s not a fan of King. That’s it. No explanation.
