An in-depth look at the Timbers salary cap situation
So, understanding the Timber's salary cap situation should allow us a better ability to understand the kind of additional signings we'd likely be looking for in the coming month.

| Total remaining | $1,088,993.40 | $966,668.40 |
Now, these numbers are no where near exact, but they should give a good idea of the kind of salary cap space the Front Office still has to play with. Today's signing of Mosquera should take a bit of a chunk out of the available cash, but if anything, I think there is still plenty of flexibility left. Feel free to weigh in if I've missed anything!
Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.

damn
Even if you’ve overestimated by a factor of 2 thats still a lot of flexibility and doesn’t take into account any allocation money we’ve got correct?
And take plenty of tissue paper so they can dry their eyes after the game.
Correct
Assuming Mosquera is on 150k-ish salary, and we sign a DP forward, even with some decent raises and alot of allocation money falling off (all depends on that Cooper trade however), I could see us having 150k-200k to sign another player(s). The more interesting question is roster spots….we have alot of guys that count against that top-20 senior roster position I can’t see us being super willing to give up for nothing.
Really, the Cooper trade is one of the sole reasons for this. It cleared ALOT of money off the cap and so far we’ve only spent 150k of it (and therefore, not tapped all the other roster cuts).
Any new MP Tweets?
I love/hate his teases on Twitter. We seem to have a fair amount of $$$ for some players to be signed with.
Unbalanced trade?
I wouldn’t be surprised if we sent away someone like say Palmer in a trade for a guy who is better but overpaid. If only Bobby Convey made like 100k less I think we could get him on the cheap.
What players might be on the trade block here soon from other teams?
But will they use it?
I doubt that they will tie up all the cap flexibility for next season. The general plan was to aim to compete for a championship a couple years down the road, yeah?
Nagbe won’t be GA forever and people like Kalif (I’m hoping, but you know what I mean) might need a decent raise to keep them in a Timbers kit.
So far the front office plan of gathering building blocks, testing them out, and really actively looking at younger players who are improving seems to be very sound. Save the space for when we are ready to make a big push to enter elite status in the league.
Perkins is on a new contract with the Timbers
For how much? We wont know until the MLS players’ union releases their info. But your estimate sounds reasonable.
Also, one or two more developmental players at $35k and you’ve got a nice ability to splash on others.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
And those 35k
Guys (and probably King actually, left it in as more buffer) don’t count against the salary cap. (top 20 senior guys only).
Great clarification... But
I just have one more question. I was curious about our international roster spot status and where we stand with how many international signings we can make. Can anyone clarify the MLS international roster spot designation for me, and where we stand?
No one knows for sure.
We know teams have 8 spots total, and that last year we traded for a 2 year intl spot rental (last year and this year) from Seattle, so we have 9.
Last year we were at the limit (had a 10th spot actually from LAG). Marcelin, Futty, Johnson have all been in the states long enough they should be close, Nagbe could perhaps have gotten his, as could maybe Gleeson, Alhassan, and Palmer (2 years seems to be the very very minimum amount of time you have to be over here). So at the very least, we are using 4 (Mosquera, Perlaza, Valencia, Chara), but are more likely at 6-7.
I swear
it was from LA…… I know we had 11 last year at one point.

After the houston trade
But we also took on Palmer.
Also, your right, mixed up the LAG and Seattle trades
The rule is
Anyone not holding a green card or US citizenship is considered an international and will take up an international spot.
No MLS team that I know has come out and said “we have x number of international players” so it is a bunch of guesswork. MP did mention that 2 maybe more players were in the process of getting their green cards and if you take that into account the Timbers have 8 or 9 players who hold that status.
Currently we have 9 International slots, every team starts with 8 but they can be traded and the Timbers traded for one from the Galaxy.

Great, informative post
This is the kind of nitty gritty I love. I think STF is going to be a daily visit for me instead of the more rare swing by’s I’ve done in the past. This site helps me learn, and I really appreciate it.
Quick Observation: Kevin Goldthwaite’s agent must be some kind of mad genius. If I were playing pro soccer in the US, I’d look him or her up. $110k?! You list Cooper’s sale as opening up lots of cap space, but at least a nod has to be given to Goldie’s retirement. I had no idea how much we saved by losing him to injury. For the record, I’m a Goldie fan (as I am all Irish players, but Dike is clearly not breaking our ability to maneuver. And I doubt King will get a huge amount, either.)
Goldie
was a league veteran of X number of years and if a player gets to that point then you get a significant pay raise. I don’t remember the the exact number of years but I thought it was 7.
On a complete side note players actually receive a bonus for every regular season win the winning team recieves a bonus to be distributed by players however they want to do it. The following is from the last CBA (I still have not found the new CBA and have emailed the Players Union asking for it)
Bonus Pools: The following Team bonuses will be paid, with the allocation
among players on the Team to be determined by the Team’s players:
(i) MLS Champion: $165,000
(ii) MLS Runner-Up: $60,000
(iii) Regular Season Conference Champion: $31,000
(In lieu of, not in addition to, bonus for Qualifying for Playoffs.)
(iv) Qualifying for Playoffs: $15,000
(v) U.S. Open Cup Champion: $100,000
U.S. Open Cup Runner-Up $50,000
(U.S. Soccer will pay these bonuses or such other sums, if any, that U.S. Soccer
may make available. If U.S. Soccer does not pay such bonuses, MLS will have
no obligation to do so.)
(vi) Regular-Season Game Winner: $2,750
The Union will consult with MLS regarding distribution of the regular-season
game winner bonus

Is Chara's Salary counted as 335k?
Or is his hit to the salary cap at the 100k level and just uses as DP slot?
His salary cap hit is
335k because of the fact that his salary plus the repayment of the transfer fee is over 335k. His Salary is 100k but the 2 Million MLS/Merritt paid to obtain the right to sign him also count.

Luxury Tax
Do we really think that the Timbers will be willing to pay the luxury tax to acquire a 3rd DP? Also did we get any allocation money for missing the playoffs?
No luxury tax in MLS
If we were to sign a third dp, they would count between 150k – 335k against the cap depending on their age but our total salary has to stay under the cap.
We would have gotten some allocation money for missing playoffs, no one knows for sure how much. We could have got some from the Cooper trade, and although I originally believed allocation cash expired at the end of the year, I’m seeing discussion that it can be rolled over from last year as well.

I don't know what the proper name is...
but we have to pay a “fee” of I believe $250,000 if we sign a 3rd DP, and that money is divided up among all teams that do not sign a 3rd DP. . That money is separate and not related to the actual player’s salary. I don’t know if that money counts against the cap or not.
I’ve heard that fee referred to as a “luxury tax” several times now, but I don’t know if that’s really an accurate way of describing it. I assume that’s what he’s referring to.
We're exempt
Its 250k paid by the owner to be distributed to other teams that haven’t signed a 3rd DP, but in an effort to further incentive clubs to sign young DPs, we are pretty sure that if you sign a young DP, you avoid paying that fee.
