The U.S. Women's National Team just beat the Dominican Republic 14-nil in an Olympic Qualifier match...
A record for the USWNT.

Never seen a soccer highlight skip so many goals.
Nor recall even one skipping ANY goals!
0-1 in 35 secs. Great
Next highlight
0-6 for the seventh goal. WAIT, where’s 2-6?
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
I was at the game last night
And couldn’t believe how quickly and easily they were scoring. The last time I saw a score this high was in my last year of playing when we beat a team 13-nil…

Soccer should have a mercy rule
Otherwise it’s just a shameful running up of the score and a cheap way to get headlines, and perhaps why few take women’s professional soccer seriously except during the Women’s World Cup. At what point do you just shut it down, pass it around the middle third, and close the game off?

At some point before it reaches 14-0 in my opinion.
I don’t like it.

I don't think I can blame the players
They’re just playing the match. This kind of lopsided victory unfortunately happens all the time in qualifiers, to both men’s and women’s teams. Remember Australia vs American Samoa? The players aren’t to blame for those games — the matches themselves should simply not be allowed to happen.
I don’t think this kind of result has anything to do with how popular women’s professional soccer is, though. I think people who already aren’t interested in WPS might use this as a reason why they aren’t interested, but they weren’t going to be interested anyway. I do think people have a more visceral reaction to watching women, as opposed to men, lose a game by that much, but I imagine for the players, regardless of gender, there isn’t much difference between losing 6-0, 14-0 or 31-0.

Point taken
But what I meant was this… WPS is in serious trouble, they want more support for the league and more support for women’s soccer in general during non WC years. Okay. But a lopsided score like this, in a match up that probably shouldn’t happen, is not a good advert for the women’s game in general and could make people think, “Oh, women’s soccer. It’s a fancy intramural that the US dominates just because of Title XI.” Australia/Somoa men? Few people really care. But people take note when the USWNT play.
It’s really not all the players fault, not completely. But at some point someone on the field has to say, “Alright, we made our point. Let’s just close the game down.” A team of their quality has very little to gain by running up the score like that.
That's what she said.

I think I mostly agree with you
I’d take a slightly more positive point of view, that the US dominates because few other countries in the world are as egalitarian in terms of the opportunities provided to their female youth over the last 30 years. And it’s fantastic that so many people take note when the USWNT play. I’m sure far fewer people (percentage-wise) in the Dominican Republic took note of last night’s game.
Which I suppose is the real tragedy of last night’s game — the US certainly didn’t do anything to promote the women’s game in the Dominican Republic.

What I said earlier isn't my view
It’s just that some people see it that way.

However,
I do think it was foolish for the US team to field so many first team players, and they paid the price.

Until more teams reach competence, the final round of women’s CONCACAF qualifying should be a 4 team round robin group with the US, Canada, Mexico and one team that makes it through the early qualifying rounds.
The current system is terrible. Not only does it feature complete mismatches, but it also puts everything on the semifinal— one fluky game shouldn’t cost you a bid.
I'm fully convinced our women's team can beat our men's team these days
Did anyone else watch that horrible display put on by the USMNT against Venezuela the other day? It gives me such little hope for 2014.
You thought the display was horrible?
I see about 4 players out there making a game day 18 in the World Cup. The opponent probably had a little more of the same.
There were some good revelations. Jones is good compared to the squad he was with. Our backline has promise. Klinsman’s style was exhibited more than at any other time, which is high tempo, extremely fit players, push for possession of the ball. One late goal shouldn’t distract from what was accomplished. With little time to have his hands on the players, lets see how the US handles Italy. But I think this result shows Klinsman better than what one weekend in Genoa will show with Euro based players.
