David Horst Undergoes Hip Surgery; Out 5-7 Months
This is kind of one of those good news-bad news posts. The good news is that David Horst has finally gotten the surgery he needed all last season. According to Merritt Paulson, via Twitter, Horst suffered from issues all last season with regards to this specific injury and it needed to get taken care of. Now it has, and he can be on his way to recovery, even if we do miss him for a few months. Here's hoping that's close to May than July.
The bad news, of course, is that the Timbers are now going to miss a key center back for the first few months of the season. There's still Eric Brunner and Futty Danso, of course, but Horst was always a great substitute to have, or even a starter at times. This removes a bit of depth that the Timbers desperately need.
There's still some key spots to fill on the roster, however, so it might not be such a big issue come March, especially if the Timbers sign another Colombian...

Well sh*t
Gutted. I hope there was a good reason for waiting until now for surgery. Hopefully he recovers faster than expected but I think you have to assume he will be out 7 months and when he returns his fitness won’t be there for a full 90’. In other words, D depth just became a urgent priority.

Yeah, I was also wondering why this didn’t happen two months ago. Maybe they thought he could get away without having surgery.
Just got a tweet from MP
I asked him if they’ll be adding depth. His reply, "will be a lot more than ‘depth’ "
In two seconds I went from gutted and worried to curiously aroused.

Apparently they're adding width too
unless Merritt knows of a third dimension, or is only going to add fat players.

Ha!
Multi-dimensional players and their doppelgangers hopping in and out of a parallel universe. That ought to get us more clean sheets.

Maybe
Perhaps we will sign a couple of wide, tall center backs who will hang by each goal post, thusly reducing the width of the goal mouth.
We will, of course, miss them at the other end during corners – they will never leave the box – but we will hope for more clean sheets through our new width and depth!!!
That would be awesome
I can just see him, I prefer the David Tennant (I almost wrote Trezeguet there lol), running around the field and then he stops and stands in an offside position. 35 secs later the ball gets played down the wing and a deflection on a cross goes right to him and he taps it in.

I can hear the call now
Robbie: “Well, that was a simple task of sliding the ball home for The Doctor.”
John: “Boy Robbie, it looked like Cooper might have been offside on the play.”

Robbie:
Well, people like to think of the offside rule being a straight line across the field at the last defender, but it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, offsidey-widey stuff.

YES!
I would love to see that! I bet FIFA would have to come up with a new interpretation of the Offsides rule.

More likely
They are adding starters, and some of the current starters are being relegated to the bench.
But that's wayy less interesting than practical applications of string theory on the soccer field.

The team needed him
To model the retro kits, of course. They tried to sub in Cooper, but he kept falling down on the runway.

Sounds like we are looking at a CB. The Yamada talk is interesting, but it should be noted that draft rights are only for a 1 year loan, after which you have to negotiate a buyout with the old team. That’s why Plata was the only one to stick from last years class of foreign draftees. I’d be pretty surprised to see us go away from Hedges/Berry/Jean-Baptiste.
Clarification
If they are under contract with another team they are 1 year loans, however if they are on a free transfer they are exactly like any of the college kids.

Correct
But isn’t Yamada still under contract at Thespa Kusatsu? I thought so.
Yes
I thought I read that somewhere but I am having trouble tracking down where I read that.
Either way I think the Timbers will now go with something other than a CB at #8. Gut feeling based on what MP tweeted and the recent rumors surrounding a CB signing.

Is there really much value there at 8 w/o getting a CB?
I’d argue there isn’t. There are alot of good strikers, but likely no one better than anyone currently on our roster, and some attacking midfielders, some who could maybe play outside ala Nagbe, but again, not seeing alot of clear cut starters/impact players. I’d argue even with a CB, if we keep the pick at 8, there isn’t anyone else worth grabbing than a CB project (Hedges/Berry/Jean-Baptiste) to be our 4th CB given Horst is out for a large chunk of the year. If we move down/out though and pick up other assets, I could see us just taking BPA though.
Yeah
Not really seeing a lot the Timbers would benefit from unless they want a 2-3 year project…..
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
Which is why a GA makes more sense...
A 2 year project that’s not costing anything. Unless they need some allocation money or a new international roster spot (probably) then they’re better off aiming for one of the GAs more so than one who’s not.

Sorta
See my post in the draft post. GA players are good, unless they graduate. Sure, graduation is sorta a murky matter, but if the player we get happens to graduate within 2 years or so, you know have a guy on 100k+ salary, where a guy like Hedges or Berry is unlikely to crack even 60k over the next several years. So while its nice to avoid a hit upfront, it can force our hand on keeping a guy thats still developing at a much higher salary than you’d want (see Hall, Wallace, Valentin, etc). I don’t think a guy like Hedges or Berry is cost-prohibitive, even as a 4th CB, honestly. Right now, we are pretty good salary wise, but it would be great to have a cheap depth player coming of age when our cap is more likely to be compressed.
Further
I think unless its a major project, like a Junior Flores or unless the guy is a can’t miss ala Nagbe (in this class, Wenger and Mattocks look pretty good to me), taking a player based solely on GA status, unless you are right at the cap limit currently (we should have some space, barring some major expensive signings), is overrated. For a team like RSL, Seattle, LAG a GA is amazing because otherwise that spot is basically a warm-body. A guy like Hedges or Berry is likely to have just as good of a career as Jean-Baptiste, if not better, and I’m not sure he’s got REALLY that much better ceiling than either of the other options (and I would not be disappointed to draft him btw), but they are likely to make much less money than him because they aren’t GA signings.
Possiby...
But GA players can be traded away to remove the hit prior to graduation so there’s still little risk involved.
Also aren’t player contracts reworked prior to being signed to a team after graduating?
Alex Nimo, for example, graduated from RSL’s GA and was subsequently dropped.
I can’t find anything that says a GA contract must be resigned to the team he graduates from with the same salary.

Nothing about them being reworked
I’m not certain the if their minimum is higher than non-GA players, but if you look at most recent GA graduates, all of them appear to still be making 100k_+ (at least the ones still in the league).
Yes you can cut him, but again, look at Valentin. He’s young, talented, played 3 positions for Chivas last year, but since he graduated, they would rather find a cheaper role player rather than continue to develop him at a higher price tag. Sure we could take Jean-Baptiste, and cut him when he graduated, but who knows if he is even close to being anywhere near what his peak is. A guy like Hedges or Berry allows you to gamble another year or two to look for improvement, and could allow you to stash them on your roster as a solid #3, where a guy like Hall and Wallace make too much money to do so. Just saying, unless you are near the cap and need to avoid the salary hit, I’m not sure there is a clear reason to take a Jean-Baptiste over a Hedges/Berry, because its only 50-75k in salary as a hit, and you have a better chance of keeping a solid/not spectacular guy (of which frankly, all sound like) on your roster longer, and at a lower salary.
The Bottom Line
It really comes down to if the Timbers want cap flexibility now or in 2 years. Without knowing what the contract status for those who the Timbers are looking at signing we have know idea which they would prefer.
Contributing editor to Stumptown Footy the Portland Timbers SBN blog.
A lot of the GA contracts are going for under 100k
The days of big (by MLS standards) contracts were suddenly over, and all but the very top end Generation adidas prospects were left with offers far below what they expected to see.
MLS is using the cash differently this year than before.
I think the GA cash cow has been killed.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Good luck to him on his recovery
Some of the Timbers players can’t seem to catch a break. Just as he was rounding into form and securing a starting spot, he’s out for 6 months, then has to play catchup next year. Hopefully it doesn’t have a long term negative affect on him.
