Rubio Rubin

Rubio Rubin is one of the best prospects in US Soccer. In my mind he's the second best prospect overall, behind Junior Flores (headed to Borussia Dortmund). He left the Portland Timbers Academy just as it was forming for the U17 full time residency program in Bradenton, Florida.

I am hesitant to overhype young players. There's more of a chance he won't make it to the highest levels than there is he will. It's the nature of young potential. But if you were going to bet on a kid, you'd bet on Rubin. Quick, skilled, and fearless. Creative and willing to take on players. Good enough to pull it off.

Everyone has been blown away by Rubin here in Florida at the Nike U17 friendlies. Against Brazil, he scored 2 goals and created 2 assists. It was as dominant performance as you'll see at this level. Twice he met crosses from either side and put the ball in the net. But his best play was a slick back heel to his teammate leading to the US' second goal. He was a sub off the bench against Turkey, but that didn't stop him notching another goal and assist.

Rubin is from Beaverton. He is the #1 ranked prospect in his national class and was just awarded the US Soccer young player of the year.

There are questions as to whether Rubin is Home Grown eligible and whether the Timbers can sign him to a HG contract. But in my mind, there's no question as to whether they should.
