Arnold & Paulson via Twitter: Eddie Johnson Suffers Another Concussion [Updated]
The Oregonian's Geoffrey C Arnold has reported via Twitter that "Eddie Johnson sustained another concussion during training Monday and has returned 2 [sic] Portland."
Merritt Paulson has also tweeted: "eddie's out indefinitely. His health and well-being are the #1 priority for everyone in the organization"
This news is a huge setback for the team. Johnson has a unique style among the Timbers' strike corps and is versatile enough to be effective in a variety of different lineups.
It is fair to say that he will need to take even longer to recover from this one, so his return to the team in 2012, and even beyond that, is certainly in question. Coupled with Jose Adolfo Valencia's injury, the Timbers' once vast depth at the striker position is now cut back to five, in Kris Boyd, Jorge Perlaza, Darlington Nagbe, Bright Dike and Brent Richards.
Most importantly, though, we hope for the very best for Johnson's health.
We will update this story as new information is available.
Update 2/10: Geoffrey C Arnold interviewed John Spencer about Johnson's status today and posted this report on oregonlive.com.

Hoping for the best for Johnson's health. But...
Unless I’m mistaken, EJ takes up an international slot. Timbers really need to reconsider that now.
That's what she said.

Hate to say it but he's probably done.
Eddie said like 2 weeks ago that he considered retirement over the off-season so I think he pretty much has to now. Maybe we can cut him but insurance pays his contract? I know the NBA has that provision.
If we cut him
He’s done at least cap wise. NBA has a medical retirement, but that’s in part because NBA has guaranteed contracts. I assume there is a medical fund, either from MLS, or the Players Union, that would kick in (or MP could continue to pay it, or there could even by an insurance policy on the contract itself), but MLS doesn’t have guaranteed deals, so should we cut him by the roster compliance date, he wouldn’t count against our cap, and as far as I understand it, we wouldn’t be forced to continue to pay his salary (that said, I don’t think this is the case, just pointing out we aren’t “required” to)
Unlucky in the extreme
I’ve never heard of this type of recurring concussion before with any player, anywhere. At this stage it looks career threatening unfortunately.
It happens to NHL & NFL players all the time
It just goes unreported and they keep playing.

Well unless you are Steve Young
or some other megastar….
he was retired out through a series of concussions as I recall…
QBs are probably the exception to the unreported thing most likely.

Happens in football a fair amount actually.
There have been several college players that have retired cause of multiple concussions. Chris Owusu- Stanford, Ethan Grant – TCU etc. Soccer it’s not nearly as typical cause it’s not as violent but with brain injuries becoming better researched in these last few years I think we’ll only see the number of players that retire rise.
If only Chris Owusu had retired...
he was just cleared to participate in the NFL combine so it looks like he’s going to try and give the NFL a shot.

My gosh.
I thought I read he had retired but I looked back just now and it was a story that was essentially written ‘to owusu’ begging for him to retire basically.

Yepyou’reright, a valiant attempt at pretending you care about the guy. This is terrible news!! With three concussions in six months, it’s doubtless that the guy’s career is hanging in the balance here. A devastating blow to his aspirations. I feel so badly for him. Awful..

I don't make the MLS roster rules
It’s a shame what happened, but Timbers are going to have to make this decision soon. If he got hurt in mid-season or if he was a domestic it might be different, but MLS teams get a limited number of international slots and you can’t use them on players who aren’t going to play at all. That’s the business they all agree to be in. Sad but true.
Timbers knew the risk after two concussions but they brought back into camp anyway. Why don’t you ask them how much they really care about the guy?
The best thing for his health might be to retire or for the Timbers to let him go. Chew on that for your “oddcontemplation” of the day.
That's what she said.

You're awfully presumptuous by the way
I’ve had concussions. Also fractured my skull when I was a kid. I’m more than familiar with head injuries. Nobody cried for me when I had another concussion playing football in high school. Nobody gave a crap about my future health. Coach just told me to take a knee and a breather. I stopped playing football soon after that.
Look, I can identify with what he’s going through but he put himself out there and he knew what the risk was. Best thing for him and the team is to move on from playing and get treated so he can live a normal life.
That's what she said.

Wish him well...
so many in such a short amount of time….ouch….stay strong, recover well and do what is best…Peace be with you!
Hate to sound cold blooded here...
but if EJ counts as an international and is hypothetically done, that clears the way to sign Songo’o right?
Oderint Dum Metuant
This was my 2nd thought also.
First I felt bad for Johnson since this presumably finishes off his career but at the same time it is a business and it’d be a shame to see Songo’o leave cause we wanted to throw Eddie a bone
Already likely have an extra to sign Songo'o
The question was if we had another intl coming in, which we may not have a spot for.
Bummer
He looked good for those couple games pre-concussion. Most people remember the home draw vs. Toronto as a real low, but he had that nice strike from the top of the box. Without the concussion, Coop might have spent a longer stretch on the bench.
If he is taking up an international slot, he needs to at least take a year off.
For international signings, in addition to Songo’o any word on how Rincon looks? I saw he was in the line up today.
Move Nagbe up top and our stable of forwards still looks good.
dont forget
on that play he had half the goal to aim at with his left but brought it back to his right foot, towards the defender and the side of the goal the keeper was on, it was an easy one-timer had he used his left, it was fairly lucky

it was a pretty skillfull shot if you ask me
he brought the ball down to the right, got the keeper moving to his right and than drilled it to the left. if he hits it with his off foot who knows what happens. it was a pretty goal and wasn’t any more lucky than any other goal from outside the box.

Rincon apparently has a green card
Maybe his dad is living here in the states or something, but for whatever reason Rincon wouldn’t count as an international.
I liked what little I saw of Rincon in practice.
He is very, very young though. Reminds me of Dike last year but with more long term potential. Not a knock on Dike at all, more of a compliment to Rincon.

He needs to retire
I was shocked to seem him come back so soon after the first concussion. It scared me, and definitely seemed the wrong decision at the time. And bam, he picked up a second on a soft header.
Terrible for him, but he HAS to stop playing.
I hope he gets the care he needs
And makes a full recovery. Sad to see it happen to a player with a lot of potential, not to mention someone who worked as hard as he did.
Oklahoma State will beat LSU in the National Title game by more than 7 points.
Very very unfortunate development.
He’s got to look towards his health and family.
