Portland Timbers Single Game Tickets Available on February 28th

For those of you not lucky enough to have season tickets this year then you'll probably be relying on nabbing a few of these single game tickets. Luckily, you now have plenty of time to request February 28th off from work and get in line nice and early to ensure that you're able to attend at least a few games. And I do recommend getting in line early...

In any case, the tickets will be sold exclusively through the Jeld-Wen box office at 18th and SW Morrison with each ticket starting at $15, although that price probably increases for some key match ups (Seattle Sounders, Los Angeles Galaxy).

As an added bonus it looks like there are some bonuses such as free coffee (Stumptown) and pizza (Papa Murphy's) for those who show up early. Also Jeld-Wen (the company not the stadium) is planning on handing out 100 Home Depot gift cards to the first 100 people.

Again I do recommend getting in line fairly early. Last year most tickets to the big games were gone fairly fast and I would expect a similar thing to happen this year, especially if you want to catch the home opener against the Philadelphia Union.

Oh and one last thing, if you're on the waiting list for season tickets then you'll be able to get in on an exclusive pre-sale period beginning February 23rd.

Full presser after the jump.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers announced today that single-game tickets for the club’s 2012 Major League Soccer season will go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 28, as part of an exclusive on-sale event at JELD-WEN Field.

Single-game tickets for each regular-season home match, starting at $15, will be available for purchase on Feb. 28 exclusively at the JELD-WEN Field box office, located on the KeyBank Plaza at the corner of SW 18th Ave and SW Morrison, from 5-10 p.m. During the on-sale event, fans can purchase up to four tickets per game and will be allowed to purchase tickets for up to two games per transaction.

At the event, Papa Murphy’s and Stumptown Coffee Roasters will provide free pizza and coffee samples for fans. JELD-WEN Windows & Doors will distribute JELD-WEN/The Home Depot gift cards to the first and final 100 fans that purchase single-game tickets on Feb. 28. Additionally, the JELD-WEN Showroom at the stadium will be open and fans are invited to stop by during their visit to JELD-WEN Field.

Starting Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m., individual-game tickets will go on sale through Ticketmaster and fans will be able to purchase tickets through the stadium box office, local Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Season ticket holders and fans on the Season Ticket Waiting List will have the opportunity to purchase single-game tickets during an exclusive pre-sale period starting Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m.

The Timbers open their second MLS campaign against the Philadelphia Union on Monday, March 12, at JELD-WEN Field on ESPN2 as part of MLS First Kick. The Timbers have sold out 17 consecutive regular-season matches at JELD-WEN Field, reaching capacity for every league game during their inaugural MLS season in 2011. The club will play 17 regular-season home matches, as well as international exhibitions at JELD-WEN Field in 2012.

Group ticket opportunities for the 2012 Timbers season in a number of seating areas throughout JELD-WEN Field are currently available by contacting a Timbers ticket representative at (503) 553-5555 or ticketsales@portlandtimbers.com. Season tickets for the 2012 season are sold out. Fans can join the Timbers Season Ticket Waiting List by contacting a Timbers ticket representative at (503) 553-5555 and making a $50 per-seat refundable deposit. Those on the waiting list have first priority to purchase season tickets or other ticket packages when they become available and have access to special pre-sale opportunities among other benefits.

Additional ticket information and a helpful Virtual Venue feature can be found at www.portlandtimbers.com. The Timbers Virtual Venue feature gives fans the ability to simultaneously compare three-dimensional, 360-degree views from various seating sections and explore the amenities at JELD-WEN Field.

I'll be there early.

Thought tickets started at $8, any idea if these include fees or just not selling the cheapo terrace?

Correction: The Final 100 also get Home Depot gift cards!

“gift cards to the first and final 100 fans that purchase single-game tickets on Feb. 28”

And

Season ticket holders will get in on the pre-sale at the same time as those with deposits.

I’m sure there will be plenty of people there early, but I’m not sure the pay off is quite there this year, at least in comparison to last year. The first home game as an MLS team is done, no Henry and Redbull game, you’ve got two chances to get Seattle, and perhaps most importantly, you can only buy tickets for two games anyway and then you’d have to get back in line (last year I got six games). I’m sure they’ll easily sell out every game this year, but I don’t think the difference between standing in line for eight hours before sales start (which I did last year) and getting there at 4:30 (if not just using ticketmaster online the next day) is going to make nearly the difference that it made last year when that was the only option to get tickets for the biggest two or three games of the year. I’m calling a bluff and will come down at 4:30.

by oddcontemplation on Feb 8, 2012 4:42 PM PST reply actions

Be prepared to wait anywhere from 4-6 hours

Either from the time you get there to the time the box office opens or for however long you’ll have to be in line if you’re dumb enough to get there after work like I did last year. Also come bundled up. I came with my wife (at the time fiancee) and we waited from about 4:30 to just past 10pm for two pairs of tickets (to FC Dallas and the Galaxy game). Thankfully I’ll get my pre-sale on and pick and choose the games I’m going to, using the money I was saving up in case I did get season tix this year with the wifey..

I’m thinking Philly, L.A., DCU, and the 3 Cascadia games will be good. My friend’s going out of the country for a month so we’ll probably go to SKC and Chivas too.

If anyone isn’t a season ticket holder, this is seriously the best time to get a reasonable price on the tickets. Since I didn’t really have money until late Feb/early March last year I paid at times at least $50-60 on stubhub for TA tickets to sit where I normally sit with the rest of my friends who are STHs.

After lurking for way too long, I think its time to jump in and start posting.

Living in Bellingham, WA, I’m pretty thankful I went the season ticket waiting list route. I’d be pretty bummed if I missed out on tickets because I couldn’t get to the box office. Although, as an outsider I’d sure like the experience of hanging out with a bunch of fellow fans. There aren’t too many up here.

Good hunting on tickets

and welcome to the bunch!

You are not an outsider. Best of luck with ticket purchasing!

by pecorasc on Feb 8, 2012 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the welcome

I suppose outsider wasn’t the right choice of term. It’s nice to have the chance to talk with fellow fans from time to time. For reasons beyond me, my wife doesn’t have the same level of interest in, say, the development of Songo’o as I do.

by bellinghamster on Feb 9, 2012 6:35 AM PST up reply actions

What?

No Worries my wife has ZERO interest in sports. Luckily she lets me go to the games :) I love her.

She's awesome actually

She accompanied me to the game in Vancouver and she jumped, clapped, and sang with best of ‘em. And loved it. She just doesn’t get into the, um, finer points of rosters, tactics, etc.

AND she is looking forward to a couple of road trips to Portland for games.

Overall, I can nor ever will complain.

What is the limit on pre-sale tickets for season ticket holders?

by pecorasc on Feb 8, 2012 9:39 PM PST reply actions

If I remember right it's four extra tix per game

at least that’s what I think it was last season.

by pdb on Feb 9, 2012 6:48 AM PST up reply actions

4 per game?

Like I can buy an extra 4 for every game?!? I assumed it would be more like 4 for the season.

by Disclaimer on Feb 9, 2012 9:20 AM PST up reply actions

If you are an STH you can get up to four extra tix per game, yep

Check with the ticket office to confirm but I’m 99% sure that’s how it works.

by pdb on Feb 9, 2012 9:48 AM PST up reply actions

That's pretty ridiculous

In addition to being able to buy up to four extra seats before they even get to the people on the waiting list, they get to go ahead of the pre-sale and buy up to four tickets extra per game? Geez. Might as well make the whole stadium STH-only.

by vitaminx on Feb 9, 2012 9:56 AM PST up reply actions

I'm a STH and I agree

I think 2 per game and adding 1-2 tickets per season to your season tickets is more than enough

by jeffmoe on Feb 9, 2012 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

Totally agree

I think the FO is starting to get the message on this though. I think that’s why they are including folks on the wait list with the STH in the presale. You have to give people something for putting down money to be on the list.

by Disclaimer on Feb 9, 2012 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

I think

the folks on the current waiting list are in the same boat as current season ticket holders as far as this pre-sale goes. The press release above says that both groups can get in on the pre-sale at 10AM on the 23rd.

But yes, I would think that if you are not in either one of these groups, you may have a tougher time getting tickets. We’ll see.

by Disclaimer on Feb 9, 2012 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

I've bought a few extras, but I have a problem with 4 per

The problem is there are (and I don’t know how many) STH who are actually scalpers. So buying 4 more per game is bad news for Timbers fans on that count.

volatilelyle.com

by almost awesome on Feb 9, 2012 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

In theory yes

in reality, maybe. Those tickets aren’t by or in some cases even near your STH seats, they’re 2x or more expensive AND you have to pay for them up front (no payment plan). I’m sure there are a handle full of jerky STHs that will buy a ton just to resell, but I don’t think that would be anywhere near the norm.

And take plenty of tissue paper so they can dry their eyes after the game.

by ledjom on Feb 9, 2012 10:21 AM PST up reply actions

Mainly

the STH’s that are buying the 4 extra for every game are scalpers (which I hate but not much we can do about it).

I'd like to know what is being done about that

And if things are being explored to prevent it. I bet they could cut into it if they made a concerted effort.

volatilelyle.com

by almost awesome on Feb 9, 2012 12:21 PM PST up reply actions

There is virtually nothing that can be done about scalpers in any sport anywhere

Pretty much the only way to prevent scalping is to tie ticket sales and venue admission to a photo ID, so that the person who bought the ticket is the only one that can redeem it. Other than that, there’s no way to effectively link a ticket to a specific seller/buyer.

STH tickets have account numbers on them, which could also accomplish the same goal, but the Timbers don’t ever verify that I am actually the one redeeming my tickets. If I decided to sell every ticket I owned, the only way it would get back to the Timbers is if someone in my section reported that I was never there.

by pdb on Feb 9, 2012 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

They could stop a lot of the online scalping...

All they would have to do is have their staff go onto Craigslist/ebay/etc. every now and then. Buy a few tickets from scalpers, and then if they turn out to be part of a season ticket package, void the whole package. They would recoup their costs by simply being able to resell some of the same tickets twice.

Or, if they don’t want to go that far, they could at least flag the accounts of scalpers and then refuse to renew their tickets the next year.

Obviously you’d have to be VERY clear up front that engaging in that kind of scalping was grounds to have your tickets voided, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we all agreed to that already when we bought our season tickets.

The real problem though, is that you would almost certainly catch some regular fans in your net – people who usually do go to the games, but just wanted to sell tickets they couldn’t use and who got greedy and marked them up a bunch.

by Disclaimer on Feb 9, 2012 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think they do that, actually

And I think it is in the STH language that scalping is grounds for STH revocation, but as you say, it’s hard to differentiate between the legitimate STH who can’t make a game or two and the scalper.

If MLS is like every other sports league, expect them to partner with Stubhub or the like in the next few years. That’s a huge market right now.

by pdb on Feb 9, 2012 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

Craigslist posts

…offering tickets to every game on the schedule two months before the season starts are very suspect.

Luckily, a dedicated bunch of TA folks monitor the Craigslist ads for people selling tickets for super inflated prices and flag them. It has deterred scalping online quite a bit. (I won’t divulge their information but rest assured that I am not one of them; my boss would probably fire me if I spent time monitoring CL on the clock)

You're last point is a good one

I’d snitch on a scalper, and I bet lots would feel comfortable doing so as well.

I don’t have a ton of ideas, but I have to think there is more than ‘virtually nothing’ that can be done about it, and ideas from people smarter than myself. Once tickets go out I could log onto StubHub (and individual outlets that are similar) and see which seats are for sale for every single match.

volatilelyle.com

by almost awesome on Feb 9, 2012 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, but again

that doesn’t tell you the intent of a seller. I have sold tickets on StubHub (not for Timbers games) for less than face value simply because I couldn’t attend, but once I did actually sell concert tickets for significantly higher than face value – but again because I couldn’t attend.

The problem with event tickets – for all events, not just Timbers games – is that they do not strongly, irrevocably link to an identity. Season tickets tie to an account number, but that doesn’t prevent general sale tickets from being scalped. Ticket purchases tie to a credit card, but that card could be fraudulent or stolen; they tie to an email address, but it’s not like getting an email address requires proof of identity.

Tickets don’t tie to anything that is not forgeable or spoofable, and until they do there is no real way to prevent tickets from reaching the secondary market.

by pdb on Feb 9, 2012 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

If seats 12-13 row k section 116

are available on stubhub for every single match, I think the Timbers can refuse to renew that guy’s season tickets.

volatilelyle.com

by almost awesome on Feb 9, 2012 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely

And I believe they have stated they will do that. But that doesn’t solve the whole problem.

Season Ticket Holder Cards

I know this has been discussed previously. If every STH had a plastic credit card type thing, rather than a paper ticket for every game, it would seriously cut back on scalping. I imagine “take this card and meet me back here after the game” would not work out very well. I’m sure there would be a “print out your ticket” or “email your ticket” option, but if they flagged every printout, it would make it very easy to tell who is obviously scalping.

"I'm not blind, I'm deaf, I'm halfway to a ref!" (Well technically I'm 1/3rd of the way since I can properly call offsides, but that doesn't sound as catchy..)

by Half-Ref on Feb 9, 2012 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

All these tickets are online

Even the ones that are sold outside the stadium had previously been posted. If they can track it online, they can drop the hammer on a lot of this.

volatilelyle.com

by almost awesome on Feb 9, 2012 3:30 PM PST up reply actions

That's my point

Right now tracking print-outs/paper tickets is damn near impossible. However, if the STH had plastic cards, it would much easier to flag all the printed paper tickets (after scanning the ticket, hit a little button the scanner thing that marks it as a paper ticket). After 3 or 4 matches, it would probably be pretty easy to tell which STH is not actually using their tickets. Of course, this all makes sense in my head but might not be that realistic..

If I am on the STH waiting list

is there a limit on how many games I can buy tickets to? And how many tickets per game am I allowed to buy. The # of games I can purchase in the pre-sale was especially unclear.

by zagman07 on Feb 9, 2012 11:04 AM PST reply actions

Limits

There is not limit to the number of games you buy to. However there is a limit of 4 tickets per game.

We aren't sure...

but it sounds like you have the same rules as existing STHs, which last year was up to 4 tickets per game, for as many games as you want.
