NTR: Canada to bid for 2026 World Cup

16

File this one under world soccer news... It appears that our northern neighbors are looking to secure the 2026 World Cup for themselves. This is GREAT news for us and it's the reason why I bring it up here on Stumptown Footy. First, some of you might be thinking that the USA should make another go of it in 2026. After all, they came so close in 2022, right? Unfortunately, it's an unlikely prospect even then. Fact is, FIFA likes two types of countries to host World Cups: European ones and new ones. The United States is neither. Second, Canada needs its own World Cup. Yeah, they've come a long way since their first MLS side joined up in 2007, but to really go beyond they need their own WC to motivate them on all sides. MLS is still mostly an American league. This could help them build up more D2 teams and, ultimately, more MLS sides. Finally, Canada is pretty close and easily accessible for anybody in America (even southern Californians and Floridians). For us in Portland, getting up to BC Place for a match would be a breeze. So there you have it. I'm throwing my full support behind Canada for the 2026 because, honestly, they have the best chance to secure it.
