Rain, Timbers U23s Fight for Playoff Positioning in Hillsboro Doubleheader

The Portland Rain (4-2-2, 14 pts.) will take on WPSL Northwest Division rival Spokane Shine (3-2-2, 11pts.) in their second meeting of the season between these squads.

In the first meeting of the season June 23, the Rain were victorious 2-0 on goals by Natalie Meiggs and Nicole Strong. Spokane comes in to the came having beaten Emerald City FC 1-0 Friday and currently sit in 3rd place in the division. Portland comes in having beaten Oregon Rush 5-0 on July 1 on goals by Whitney Pitalo, Lindsay Bauman, Alison Martin, Nicole Strong, and an Oregon Rush own goal.

Both teams are fighting for playoff positioning. With only the division winner earning a spot in the WSPL Playoffs the Rain currently sit in second place with 14 points after 8 matches played, while Spokane sits in 3rd place with 11 points after 7 matches played. Both teams will likely need first place Issaquah SC to fall in at least one match. They sit at 17 points after 8 matches played. Emerald City FC (2-1-4, 10 pts.) rounds out the playoff race, sitting in 4th place with 3 matches remaining.

In their final game of the season, the Rain will host Eugene Metro FC (2-4-2, 8pts) at Gladstone High School in Gladstone, OR on July 15 at 3:00pm. This game is potentially part of a doubleheader with the Portland Timbers U23s, pending playoff positioning.

PORTLAND TIMBERS U23s v. KITSAP PUMAS

The second match of the doubleheader features the past two PDL Champions when the Portland Timbers U23s (9-3-2, 29pts) host the Kitsap Pumas (9-4-2, 29pts) in a match with significant playoff implications. Both teams currently sit in 2nd place in the PDL Northwest Division at 29 points each, 1 point behind division leader Seattle Sounders U23s (9-2-3, 30pts), who shocked Kitsap 2-1 last night with 87th minute goal by DeAndre Yeldin put the teams level and was quickly followed by a Steve Mohn own goal. Portland defeated 4th place Washington Crossfire (8-6-1, 25pts) 1-0 on a 69th minute goal for Mark Sherrod's team leading 10th goal of the season.

In their first meeting the season on May 24 at JELD-WEN Field, Portland crushed Kitsap 4-0 on goals from Andrew Riberio (33'), Cam Vickers (34'), and two goals fromSteven Evans (39', 54'). In the second meeting on June 9 in Bremerton, Kitsap and Portland traded goals in a 2-2 draw, with Clark Phillips (10') and Erik Hurtardo (54') scoring for Portland and Ben Truax scoring both goals (21'; 64') for Kitsap.

Portland is coming in on a four match unbeaten run, with victories over North Sound 3-1, Fraser Valley 2-0, and Washington 1-0, as well as a 1-1 draw with Victoria. Before their loss to Seattle, Kitsap had been on a two match unbeaten run and are 2-2-1 in their last five matches.

This is the last regular season match for Kitsap, while Portland will travel to Redmond, WA on Wednesday to face Washington Crossfire in their final match of the regular season. Both teams have already clinched spots in the PDL playoffs, which begin next weekend.
