After a week off, the Timbers Academy got its first taste of Cascadia action, as the Saplings traveled north for a showdown at Starfire against the Sounders on Saturday. Lineups for both matches are included after the jump.
The first match of the day saw the Timbers U-18s score its first goal in the academies' history when Portland-native Christian Desir opened his account in the 13th minute. The Saplings looked well on their way to a victory, before Ike Crook equalized for Seattle in the 87th minute.
In the second match of the doubleheader, the Timbers Academy program earned its first ever victory, not just against the Sounders, but first in the program’s three match history. After a scoreless first half, Hillsboro-native Jesse Garcia-Aguilar tallied in the 57th minute, and followed it up by completing the brace in the 63rd. Just shy of ten minutes later, the Sounders responded as Shane Gomez scored to help Seattle avoid the shutout.
Next weekend marks an historical one of sorts for the Saplings as the Academy hosts home matches for the first time. On Saturday October 6, the Timbers Training Facility will play host to the Portland Timbers U-17/18s and U-15/16s matches against Real So Cal (based in the San Fernando and Conejo Valley areas of California) at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. The following day, Arsenal FC (Temecula, Calif.) visit the Timbers Training Facility at 12 p.m. (U-17/18) and 2:30 p.m. (U-15/16).
