With the Portland Timbers Academy roster popping up this week and before I try and delve into the full roster – here is a quick glance at the three players on the roster NOT from Oregon or Southwest Washington.
The Timbers have three players from outside of the standard territory on the U-18 Roster: Lucas Cawley (Centerville, Utah), Michael Gray (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Sam Werner (Bozeman, Mont.).
LUCAS CAWLEY
A midfielder out of Centerville, Utah, Cawley is the No. 4 rated player in TopDrawerSoccer’s Summer of 2012 ratings of the Rocky Mountains & Southwest Region rankings for the Class of 2014. Cawley is a former member of Real Salt Lake (AZ).
As a freshman at Viewmont High School in Utah, Cawley was viewed as the top soccer player in the state earning him the opportunity to join RSL-Arizona as a 16-year-old. Cawley was a regular starter for the RSL-Arizona U-16 squad, and even invited to participate in the Real Madrid Select Camp in Madrid. Cawley has also trialed in England with Fulham and South Hampton.
MICHAEL GRAY
A defender/forward from Las Vegas, Gray is also a former member of RSL-Arizona. The former member of the U.S. U-15 squad has played for one of the top athletic high schools in the Las Vegas area (Bishop Gorman) before moving to RSL-Arizona.
Gray was a member of the ODP Region IV All-Tournament First Team in 2011.
SAM WERNER
Werner, a midfielder, from Bozeman, Montana, was viewed by ESPNHS to be a top candidate for the 2010-2011 Gatorade Montana Boys Soccer Player of the Year award. Werner trained in March and August of 2011 with Stoke City of the English Premier League.
Werner has verbally committed to play college soccer at Stanford.
