Rumor: Argentine Diego Valeri Loaned to Portland Timbers for One Year

Steve Dykes

More reports are surfacing out of Argentina that link the creative midfielder to the Portland Timbers for a one year loan deal.

According to multiple reports out of Argentina, the Argentine playmaker Diego Valeri is set to make a move to the Portland Timbers on a one year loan deal worth $400,000. Nothing is confirmed, obviously, but according to one report the Argentine is already here in Portland.

According to Rock and Ball:

He traveled to the northern hemisphere last night to undergo routine medical examination and patient waiting for his transfer to Portland Timbers , the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Translated from Spanish.

Apparently the creative midfielder has fallen out of favor with his new head coach: Guillermo Barros Schelotto. If that name sounds familiar to you, it should. Schelotto is a former designated player in the league and is currently counted as one of the Columbus Crew's all time greatest players. Given Schelotto's connections within the league, it would not be entirely impossible for him to have set up this loan deal with the Portland Timbers.

As for Valeri himself, I don't know much other than he's still fairly young at 26. I can also tell you that going on loan is a fairly frequent event for him. In 2009 he was loaned to Portuguese power-house Porto for the 2009-2010 season. He was then loaned to Spanish second division side UD Almeria.

Additionally, according to his Wikipedia page he captained his Argentine side Lanus to a 2011 Clausera runner-up. Not bad.

As always, nothing is confirmed from either Lanus, Diego Valeri or the Portland Timbers so take this for what it is: a rumor.

What do you think about bringing in the Argentine play maker?
