The Portland Timber's added Pa Modou Kah to the roster about a week after Mikaël Silvestre tore his ACL. He started for the Timbers a few games later and--but for two suspensions--started every game for the remainder of the season.
2012 Rank: N/A
Kah's season with the Timbers started out with some ups and downs. He first came in and helped the Timbers prolong the unbeaten streak they'd had going since March, but he then earned an early red card in the match against the Columbus Crew. That game broke Portland's unbeaten streak and was their first road loss all season. He also earned himself a less than sterling reputation, fueled by some reckless tackles and an incident with Eddie Johnson when the Timbers played at CenturyLink.
Late in the season though, Caleb Porter made the somewhat unexpected move of pulling Andrew Jean-Baptiste from the starting XI and replacing him with Futty Danso. Kah and Danso--aka The Great Wall of Gambia--presided over a six-game unbeaten streak to finish out the season. In that time, they didn't allow a single goal at Jeld-Wen Field.
A possible off-season center back signing and Silvestre's return from injury could mean that Kah has to face some more competition for a starting spot in 2014 than he did on 2013's injury-stricken roster. However, especially withgone (a move that definitely would have changed my 2014 ranking for Kah if it had happened earlier), we'll probably be seeing plenty of Kah in 2014, if not in league play than in Cup and CONCACAF Champions League games.
