Regarding my opinion piece today...

So I haven't been able to check the site since this morning when I left for class, but since then I've noticed the comment thread has gotten way out of hand. I've been emailed and told by personal friends that there's some nasty stuff going on in there about me, personally.

As such I just wanted to address some things here, on a more neutral level, so that everybody can understand where I'm coming from. I won't be reading those comments because, as a writer who has to do this every day, at some point I have to cut myself off for fear of taking in too much. Anybody who has been publicly criticized can agree that there's a limit people can take and I'm not sure I want to hit my limit. I enjoy writing and don't want it to be a negative experience.

So first I wanted to explain my post:

There's a huge difference between intent and what often ends up being perceived. Some have accused me of intending to cause controversy. I promise you I did not. My intention was to start conversation. It's all I ever want. I figured it was a sleepy Monday morning. Rivalry week content was still a couple days away (we typically start pregame stuff on Wednesdays) and it would lead to better understanding not only from me, but also from others who might not understand the said issue.

Looking back on my original article, I can see why some took it as negative. Perhaps some part of me was still feeling negative about the loss (I was in the stands as a fan, after all). Perhaps I didn't proofread it clearly enough. Perhaps writing a controversial article at 6:00am isn't the best idea in the world. If I could re-write it in a way that better expresses my thoughts, I absolutely would, but the damage is done and hindsight is always 20/20. I do sincerely apologize for anybody who felt like I was pointing my finger in shame at them, or who thought I was writing in an overtly negative manner.

On a final note there's one thing I want to get crystal clear with everybody who reads this site. The only people who give me money for writing on this site is SB Nation and even then it's not a lot and I then spend that money on my other contributors (drinks, food, etc.). This is a hobby for me. I like writing. I love the Timbers. I spend around 3 hours of my day, every day, doing this because I want to. Anybody who tells you anything else is lying. That's not me being defensive. That's simply the truth.

Feel free to use these comments to address anything about my writing in a constructive manner. If you need to get something very negative off your chest, please do it in the opinion comment thread as well as any further discussion on that topic.

I certainly hope this doesn't become a divisive issue here.

Alright guys, I don't believe I have to say this but, just in case, please do not submit anything racist, homophobic, sexist or otherwise not appropriate for even the younger Timbers fans.
