By the Numbers:
2: Number of days after arriving in Portland from his native France that Mikael Silvestre found himself in the starting lineup. Also, number of freebies Silvestre gave to New York Red Bulls striker Fabian Espindola.
21: Number of shots taken against New York, with 10 on target.
496: According to Mike Donovan, the number of passes the Timbers successfully completed, as compared to New York's 349.
4: The number of times Diego Valeri juggled the ball off Kalif Alhassan's flick before rolling it into the goal off the side of his foot.
Moment of the Match
The Sunshine Own-Goal? Perhaps not one for the annals of Timbers lore like the original sunshine goal, it was certainly good enough for Moment of the Match. With the Timbers Army singing its traditional rendition of "You Are My Sunshine," Darlington Nagbe raced forward with the ball and launched a shot from just outside the 18, but it was barely kept out by a sprawling Luis Robles. Jose Adolfo Valencia collected the deflection and, after knocking defender Roy Miller off the ball, picked out a spot on Jamison Olave's thigh and drilled it, bouncing the ball into the goal.
The goal pulled the Timbers level at 3 with the Red Bulls. Perhaps more importantly, though, the final ten minutes of the match finally featured the Timbers stealing points from their opponents rather than the other way around.
Injuries and Suspensions
None reported; not even so much as a card for either side.
Around the League
Seattle Sounders 0:1 Montreal Impact: though dominant and in control of possession for much of the match, the Sounders were limited to just three shots on target and opened their 2013 campaign with a 1-0 loss.
Vancouver Whitecaps 1:0 Toronto FC: After a pretty boring first half, Gershon Koffie blasted a shot past Joe Bendik, prolonging Toronto's frustration for yet another match.
LA Galaxy 4:0 Chicago Fire: Mike Magee scored a hat trick, and Robbie Keane added one more, suggesting that LA will be just fine without Beckham and Donovan.
San Jose Earthquakes 0:2 Real Salt Lake: No late match heroics for the Quakes this time, as Alvaro Saborio showed no signs of missing his old teammates who had earlier combined for four goals (one O.G.) and one assist in Portland.
