We've been following along with the Portland Timbers U-23 squad in U.S. Open Cup play so far, but up until now we did not know where the MLS squad would end up. Now we do. According to a press release, the Timbers will face off against either the Austin Aztex of the PDL or the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL-Pro on Wednesday May 29th at Jeld-Wen Field.
What's more, and even better in my opinion, is that the USOC match is included in your season ticket holder package as 'Game B.' So if you have season tickets this means you won't have to pay to get in. This should ensure a large and lively crowd for the night, even if the opponent is of smaller stature than we're used to. This also means that aside from the Copa Verde and the match against Norwich, there probably won't be anymore international friendlies this year. Which is certainly fine with me.
The Aztex and the Hammerheads will face off against each other on Tuesday, May 21st to determine who goes where. After that we will know who exactly we'll face in this first round of the tournament.
What do you think about the Timbers' first two possible opponents in USOC? What about the match being included in season ticket packages?
