Tonight the Portland Timbers make their not-so-triumphant return to the U.S. Open Cup, our country's national tournament held every year between 64 clubs. No wait, 68 clubs now. Or is it 66? Who can say? It changes every year. In any case, the boys in green will take on the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL pro third division league. This game should be cake, no?
But, as usual, before we begin let's check out last weekend's winners:
So I got to be a bit picky for my winners this time around as so many of you got the score correct. This led me to picking based on player and minute predictions.
- Night_Train83: 2-nil win with Rodney Wallace scoring in the 34th and Pa Modou Kah scoring in the 72nd.
- FarBar: 2-nil win with Rodney Wallace brace in the 23rd and 35th minutes.
Also hats off to Andrew Wheeler and efilnikufsin for predicting the right scoreline.
Moving back to tonight's game, the Timbers should have a relatively easy time with the Wilmington Hammerheads. Then again, the Timbers have never been a strong USOC team since joining MLS. Their most recent embarrassment coming at the hands of a 1-nil defeat against 5th division side Cal FC.
We also know that Caleb Porter will be using a mix of starters and reservists tonight. So for those expecting perhaps a complete domination, I would temper expectations a bit. This will be a much more youthful side than we've come to expect.
What's your prediction for the Timbers' first U.S. Open Cup match of 2013?
