As I have been thoroughly enjoying this international break (clutch wins for USA, Chile, and Honduras, plus a mostly-empty-but-still-slightly-encouraging victory for Scotland), a familiar question keeps recurring in my mind. I'm always very curious see which players are receiving international call-ups, because it gives an interesting insight into the global nature of our league. I know some people see call-ups as an unwelcome obstacle to club success or an unnecessary spin of the injury roulette wheel, but I love the fact that our league is attracting the kind of talent that makes national team coaches take note.
So here's the question: which of my beloved Timbers players will be the first to wear the red, white, and blue as well as the green? I know there have been Timbers who had previously received call-ups (Troy Perkins, Kenny Cooper, and Eric Alexander off the top of my head, and I think Sal Zizzo too?), but to the best of my knowledge we have never had a current player called up to the USMNT, right? I think we definitely have some high quality players who would be strong candidates for USMNT call-ups in their current form if they happened to be American, like Will Johnson, Los Dos Diegos, and Rodney Wallace (the US badly needs good wingers right now). Side note- RodWall y Los Dos Diegos would be a great name for a band. Like a Maná cover band that plays in hotel bars on weeknights. Yeah, rock that mariposa traicionera!
So anyway, who would it be? Nagbe, if he gets his full citizenship and realizes his potential? AJB in a couple of years when his mental game is on point? Umm, Mobi Fehr? Vote in the poll below and tell me why in the comments!
