Records are W-L-D
There were only two games on the docket this weekend, but both results were huge.
1. Sky Blue FC 7-1-1 previously 1
Sky Blue just keeps getting more impressive. On their return home from their impressive 3-0 road trip which saw them claim the top spot, they thrashed Boston 5-1 and showed no ill-effects from having their internationals called-up. It's time to stop beating around the bush: Sky Blue is the team to beat. They host the Flash Saturday.
And if you have not seen it yet, Lisa De Vanna scored a very sweet bicycle kick goal that has already garnered over 269,000 views on Youtube. It gave them a 2-0 lead in the 14th minutee and even proved to be the game winner.
2. Western New York Flash 3-2-1 previously 3
Was idle this weekend, but has a brutal week ahead: at Boston Wednesday & at Sky Blue Saturday.
3. FC Kansas City 3-2-1 previously 4
Was idle this weekend, and has a Pacific Northwest trip this week with games at Portland Thursday and Seattle Sunday.
4. Portland Thorns 6-2-1 previously 2
Portland showed that without Christine Sinclair, Alex Morgan, Rachel Buehler, & Karina Leblanc, they are simply awful. Even the Reign managed a draw, their only point, playing Chicago. At home in front of more than 12,400 fans who didn't care which players were gone, the Thorns put up a performance that should provide plenty of learning opportunities in the film room. One major area of improvement should be easy to fix: overall effort. Chicago looked hungry and professional while the Thorns brought an attitude fit for a pick up game.
There was some good news from the week, however, as Merritt Paulson tweeted that Tobin Heath would indeed be joining the team. She will debut in the July 14 game at Rochester, which means she'll only be available for the final 8 games of the season, fewer if there are more international conflicts scheduled. The Thorns host Kansas City Thursday.
5. Boston Breakers 3-2-2 previously 5
The Breakers were without Rhiann Wilkinson, Heather O'Reilly, & Sydney Leroux Saturday, but I'm not sure how that could be used as a viable excuse to conceding five to Sky Blue. It was an abysmal game that got away from Boston early. They need to scrub it from their collective memory and get on with hosting the Flash Wednesday and travelling to a renewed Chicago side Sunday.
6. Chicago Red Stars 1-4-2 previously 7
Well that was impressive, wasn't it? The Red Stars pick up their first win as soon as they acquired Sonja Fuss & Inka Grings from Germany. Their 2-0 win at Portland certainly exorcised some demons from their previous two home losses to the Thorns. This week, they look to continue the good form as they host Boston Sunday.
7. Washington Spirit 1-4-3 previously 6
Was idle this week and does not play until June 15.
8. Seattle Reign 0-7-1 previously 8
Was idle this weekend and hosts FC Kansas City Sunday.
