Read it and weep, campers. Professional Referee Organization (a bit of a misnomer, imho) is pleased to announce the officials for the Timbers and Union:
Philadelphia Union vs. Portland Timbers
PPL Park (7:30pm ET)
REFEREE: RICARDO SALAZAR
ASST 1: Brian Poeschel
ASST 2: Kevin Klinger
4TH: Ted Unkel
It's hard to agree with ECS, but this man is indeed a menace. It's not so much that he hates Portland or Seattle for that matter. He's just bad. And an arrogant form of bad at that.
I can't predict if he will outrage the SOB, the TA, or both. But he'll give us something to talk about that has nothing to do with gameplay.
There could be a huge upside. If, contrary to all of our fears, Fortuna smiles and the wrath of Salazar falls on the Union, it could be a lot of fun. Ask JD Drew what happens to folks who diss Philadelphia. He got a South Philly welcome from 60000 friends who made sure his first visit to the City of Brotherly Love would be memorable. It's kind of a shame there's no youtube video of Albert Bell's greeting in the '96 MLB All-Star game. The song of the boobirds was so loud, the play by play team could not be heard over the din. Or ask Randall Cunningham and Mike Schmidt about the star treatment the Philly Phaithful can give even their own. And yeah, while the story is blown out of proportion, even "Santa Claus" (or a skinny drunk with an attitude in a Santa suit) is not immune to the wrath of Philly sportsfans.
So, Ricky baby, toss a big red one at Jack Mac at the 4 minute mark, just to see what happens! C'mon. We dare you. Show us what you got.
On the other hand, it's far more likely he runs a couple of our central defenders over players who were knocked down by an exceptionally strong breeze off the Delaware River--which will make me wish I hadn't finished all my Drifter during this week's riveting Toronto/Chivas match.
