What this slump is teaching us.  Hopefully.

  1. Will Johnson isn't just the captain. He's the team MVP. We are two different teams. One of the best in the league with him. So-so without him. Which leads to...
  2. Even horses need water. The starting XI consistency was refreshing after John Spencer's endless tinkering, but one of Caleb Porter's lessons learned in year 1 is that this isn't college soccer. We rode the same guys too long, and they're starting to break down. Rotate the lineup a little more.
  3. Standing pat is falling behind. The Timbers chose not to be aggressive in the transfer window. It's costing us now.
  4. Set pieces, set pieces, set pieces.
  5. Kah isn't the answer. In fact, he's another problem we have to solve. I guess the good news is he's a warm body in the morgue that is our central defense, But when a 21 year old looks smarter and more composed than you, that's trouble. The Timbers need a more cerebral central defender. Kah isn't it.
  6. Mediocre forwards cost you in the big games. When the games matter, when space is tight, and when chances are few, you need guys who can get shots off and finish one of the few they have. We don't have one of those. Not Ryan Johnson, Not Piquionne, and not Valencia (as much as some would hope differently). Not using the transfer window to improve up front doesn't just matter now. It will really hurt in the playoffs.
  7. We can still compete. We need some guys to get healthy. We need a confidence boosting win. Keep the low high, and this team will make the playoffs. We are still a team nobody wants to face in the first round.
