The most interesting thing to come out of the announcement about the 2014 NWSL Expansion Draft was details on how many players each team is allowed to protect (full story here). Here are the highlights:
1. Portland can protect up to 9 players.
2. Any team with more than 2 U.S. allocated players must leave 1 unprotected.
3. Houston can either take a maximum of 2 players per club or 1 U.S. allocated player per club.
4. Houston can take a maximum of 2 U.S. allocated players, 1 Canadian allocated player, and 1 Mexican allocated player.
By my count, this is how our roster currently breaks down by allocation:
Mexico: Jackie Acevedo
Non-allocated: Amber Brooks, Tina Ellertson, Becky Edwards, Angie Kerr, Allie Long, Nikki Marshall, Jessica McDonald, Rebecca Moros, Emilee O'Neil, Casey Ramirez, Meleana Shim, Nikki Washington, Tiffany Weimer, Courtney Wetzel, Kathryn Williamson
We can only protect 9 of these players, and at least 1 U.S. allocated player won't be in the 9.
I'm confident that we'll protect Sinclair, LeBlanc, Morgan, and Brooks for sure. Beyond that, I have no idea which other 5 players get priority. I think choosing between Buehler and Heath is an especially difficult dilemma since both were key in our playoff run and the odds of either being taken are probably pretty high, considering the U.S. players likely to be available. I'd probably lean toward protecting Buehler but losing Heath is a huge setback to our midfield.
Who do you think we should/will protect out of this list? And who is most at risk of getting taken by Houston?
