Coming off an exciting win in their first home match of the season, the Portland Thorns are back on the road today, travelling to Rochester, NY to take on the Western New York Flash. The last time the Thorns matches up against WNY was in last year's NWSL Championship, with the Thorns coming out on top as the 3-1 winners.
The Thorns have taken a step forward in each of their games so far, but Paul Riley is still looking for improvements from the team. Against WNY the Thorns will need to continue to step their game up, particularly with the return to the pitch of one of women's soccer's most imposing goalscorers, Abby Wambach. The Flash may have gotten off to a slow start this year, losing to the Chicago Red Stars last week, but they remain a contender in the league and will definitely test the Thorns this afternoon.
Here is all the information that you need for today's match:
Match Preview: "When the Thorns and Flash met last season, we were in for exciting matches and it doesn't seem that this game should be any different. Both teams have and are missing significant pieces, so that takes away some of the luster that we would have if both sides were full strength, which probably won't be the case for at least the first two and possibly all three matches in the series, since they all happen early in the season."
