MLS All Stars -vs- FC Bayern Munich : Debrief

And with the final whistle and some severe controversy, the game between MLS' pickup squad and Bayern Munich's B-Team and hungover World Cup stars is over. What is everyone's opinion about the match here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest? Here are some of my takes:

Nick Rimando is not used to curled shots.

That first goal is all on him. He absolutely misread it in a way that was semi-embarrassing for the "best goalkeeper in MLS." Credit to Lewandowski for taking the chance, and it had a lot of pace on it (and bend), but Rimando should have got something that close to his sphere of influence.

The second half MLS team looked a lot better than the first.

Okay, Henry played well. Rimando had a few good saves. Obafemi was pretty impressive, as was Yedlin. But as a whole, Valeri, Donovan, Torres, and Wright-Phillips looked the most-impressive of the night. Also, seeing Will and Alonso play next to each other from an impartial viewpoint showed me the two are very much one-and-the-same.

Pep Guardiola and Caleb Porter...hell, and Bastian Schweinsteiger--where to begin?

Alonso had an arguably red card worthy tackle, but he's an ass and that can't be changed. Will Johnson got physical with Schweinsteiger and Schweinsteiger buckled. He's an ass and that can't be changed (but he's OUR ass), but I didn't see anything that bad with the play. In the first half, Tim Cahill got his mouth knocked in on a set piece, no call. That's also pretty physical (but it's not a World Cup star, so it's irrelevant...oh wait, try telling that to Australia).

Pep ends up refusing the ceremonial handshake with Porter, who can't control his players. Pep lost to a ragtag group of misfits, had Bastian Schweinsteiger walk down the tunnel on his own out of what was seemingly protest, and in all honesty could have gotten sent off for the abuse him and his backup GK were doing on the sidelines. Alonso? Arguably classless. Johnson? Arguably classless. Guardiola? Unquestionably classless. Like Lalas says: If you don't want to play soccer, don't play soccer.

Good on MLS. Our secondary-stars looked great, which is always good. Hopefully we can build on it.
