Timbers formally eliminated from Cascadia Cup contention

+

The Whitecaps beat the Sounders 3-0 in Seattle today, bringing them to 8 Cascadia Cup points on the season. The Sounders have 6, the Timbers 5. There are two games left, Portland at Seattle and Seattle at Vancouver. Even if the Timbers beat Seattle, they move into a tie with Vancouver, and therefore a Vancouver draw or win in the last game will get Vancouver 9+ points and the cup, or a Seattle win will get them 9+ points and the cup. The Timbers max out at 8 and someone is going to get 9+ no matter what. (Prior to today's game, the Timbers had a chance; if the Sounders and Whitecaps had drawn, it would have had the Whitecaps at 6, Sounders at 7, and Timbers at 5, meaning that a Timbers win and another Whitecaps-Sounders draw would have put the Whitecaps at 7, and Timbers and Sounders at 8 each. The Timbers have the better goal differential already, so assuming a Timbers win and Sounders draws, they would have won the Cup on the goal differential tiebreaker. So today was the formal elimination.)
