According to Taylor Twellman, the Timbers have offered Joleon Lescott a Huge Contract

The 31-year-old English defender is out of contract at Manchester City.

Taylor Twellman, who has a history of scooping major MLS deals, has tweeted that the Portland Timbers have an offer of more than $2 million on the table for former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott.

Today's announcement regarding Futty Danso's trade to Montreal Impact has had everyone in Portland thinking about central defenders but even those wearing the most rose-tinted of glasses would have been unlikely to jump straight to the 31-year-old sometimes England international.

Lescott is out of contract having spent the past five years with City and is reportedly considering options in the Premier League in addition to the huge offer from the Timbers. That kind of money would, as Twellman pointed out, make Lescott the highest paid defensive Designated Player and among the league's higest paid players overall. At present, Portland has just one Designated Player - Diego Valeri - after restructuring Diego Chara's contract.

Despite all that money, the contract would represent a significant pay cut for Lescott, who made silly City money last year - roughly $7.5 million. Still, he's unlikely to get that kind of cash anywhere else, especially as he will turn 32 in mid-August. Lescott did play in Portland against the Timbers in a July 2010 friendly at Merlo Field, however, so perhaps he has fond memories of the Rose City.

If the Timbers are going to upgrade at center back, this would be quite a splashy way to do it. But for now, as far as we know, it's only a contract offered, not yet accepted.
