Portland Opts Not to Select Anybody in Stage 2 of Re-Entry Draft

Hejduk was selected by Sporting KC, not the Timbers

Well, 16 minutes later and Portland remains in exactly the same position as it was prior to the Re-Entry Draft. Not to say that's a bad thing, but it certainly doesn't help us paint a clearer picture of where the Timbers are heading in early 2011.

But first, let's take a look at who was traded:

  • Josh Wolff to DC United
  • Jimmy Conrad to Chivas USA
  • Ryan Cochrane to NE Revs
  • Juan Pablo Angel to LA Galaxy
  • Cory Gibbs to Chicago
  • Frankie Hejduk to Sporting KC
  • Chris Seitz to Seattle
  • Jeff Cunningham to Columbus
  • Luke Sassano to LA Galaxy
  • Tyrone Marshall to Colorado Rapids
  • Fred to New England Revolution
Some solid pick ups all around, I say, the bggest being Juan Pablo Angel to Los Angeles. I don't care how old he is, Beckham, Donovan, Buddle and Angel up top is a scary proposition for any team.

Turning back to Portland, it's interesting to see that we neglected to choose anybody. I thought for sure this is where we'd get one or two choice veterans, but ultimately we came away with nobody. How will this play out next year? I can't say. I would have liked to have seen Wolff or Conrad move to Portland, but Portland had the final pick in the draft so that wasn't meant to be regardless.

Of course, just because Portland didn't grab a player via this draft doesn't mean they can't revisit them later. Should the Timbers FO be willing they are more than welcome to revisit teams that hold the rights to any of these unselected players and negotiate for them there. Then again, one has to wonder if all the effort involved would be worth it if the FO didn't opt to sign anybody without having to negotiate with another team.
