Next year will see Portland field a new top-level sports team. It might not be as big as the NBA or even MLS, but it's an important step in the city's sports legacy regardless. The fact that many of our nation's World Cup champions and Olympic gold medalists will be playing for the team and in the league, in general, should at least help to spur some interest. But will that translate into local success?
Headed by former World Cup champion and 2-time Olympic gold medalist Cindy Parlow Cone as well as former assistant coach at UNC, the Portland Thorns FC have with them a solid leader at the top. One who knows the rigors of playing in a women's national team, but also in a women's league. But she can't breed commercial success, only field-level success.
Which leads me to my discussion topic for today:
How will you support the Thorns FC next year, if at all?
Granted it's not really an easy question to answer right now given that we don't know a lot of information about the team like who the players are or even how much the tickets will cost.
